Sunshine, clouds and cliffs

We went for a cliff-top walk on Sunday, pausing at a pub for a leisurely lunch. Have some pictures, many of them of clouds.

Parking at Whale Chine - the island's answer to the Grand Canyon, with the beach now forever inaccessible due to the loss of the perilous steps that used to cling nervously to the edge of the sheer cliff - we walked the admittedly rather short distance to the pub. (Yes, I admit it: there was rather more pub than walk in this walk.) We noticed that the footpath sign had been future proofed, being positioned at the height that the path will doubtless be after a few more winters of landslips.

Although our path led to the pub, all the paths in the area seemed to lead to the church. Alfred Watkins would presumably have something to say about this.

Vast crowds of outdoor tables had paused in the middle of their migration to gather and feed on the lawn.

After lunch, we retraced our steps, pausing briefly at the car to reconsider clothing options - I'd brought 3 different coats of varying thicknesses, so I could change after lunch if I decided I regretted my first choice - then headed west for a while, along the cliffs.

The cliffs were home for Extreme Rabbits. What you can't see from this picture is just how close all these holes are to a sheer cliff, and how many of the tunnels appear to angled directly at nothing. I wonder how rabbits have had nasty shocks while indulging in some DIY.

From this point on, I started to become rather distracted by clouds.

But not so much so that I failed to photograph this contraption, which had gained an explanatory notice since my last visit. We didn't see the dinosaur that was promised.

And from then on, it was clouds, clouds, clouds, really - some of them raining, but not on us.

Shortly before dark, lava started to bubble up alarming just above the horizon...

But, phew! It wasn't a killer volcano, just a lava frog with wearing goggles. What a relief!
