Day of Silence

Apr 25, 2008 14:48

Today, people in schools all over America are being silent to honor the thousands more who are silenced literally or metaphorically by a society in which the definition of love is so restrictive that defying it can mean being insulted, beaten, raped or brutally murdered.

The goal of the Day of Silence is to make schools safer for all students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.

For me, silence was not an option in my daily life.  I instead chose to spend today talking about all the things those people the Day of Silence honors can't talk about, reminding myself and others that even though I am in an environment where I can talk about these things, there are others who aren't.
