Deutschland: August 1 - 13, 2007

Tag Freunde!

I can't believe I've been 13 days already. It feels like months, or maybe like I never left at all.
Germany is incomparably beautiful. I think in Canada I blocked it from my mind so it wouldn't pain me everytime I was in Ottawa. But despite the slightly cool weather (August in the North does tend to get cold sometimes) everything is in bloom, all beautiful greens and rich colour.

But important things first: Roger Cicero in Fulda. AMAZING. Omg, I can't even describe how amazing he was, but trust that he is funny, charming, gorgeous, and with a voice that would make angels cry. Okay, maybe not, but Aretha Franklin certainly. Ten times better live! He sang some new songs too, and some German classics. And we had a sing along. I want to marry him.

I don't remember the first day I was here, because I was completely drugged for the flight! But I have a new pair of shoes and some pants, so clearly nothing too untoward happened.

My mother and I have 3 favourite sayings:
1) 'That is the German way' - to explain anything ridiculous we do or say that is so German that it is really inexplicable;
2) 'bling' - because everything is better with it;
3) 'gangsta' - as a result of the awesome, and truly horrible way Germans pronounce English words. Also, my mum uses this word despite being far too white to do so, so it is good for mocking. :)

Really, I have to keep reminding myself I have family and school I must return too - and also that alex_andras will kill me if I do not.

Speaking to my father is a little difficult. We didn't part on the best of terms (for us, that means being upset and not talking about it at length) because the days before I left he was upset that I was leaving and I was frankly annoyed with him. Anyway, I miss him and whenever we speak I get sad no matter how happy I was before calling. It's hard for me to be away from my parents... but I never learned how, so I'm not TOO pathetic. ;)

So. Postcards for everyone are being written. I write too much to fit on a little card though, so they are really letters in envelopes. My English is suffering, actually honestly it is atrocious, but my mother is rather happy about it. The other day I was trying to tell her the 'front' of the shoe she was looking at in the shops was ugly (in English, to not be rude), and because I couldn't remember the word I said 'beginning.' Yikes.

I am watching lots of football, of course: the mini-Bayerns and mini-Arse in the Youth Champions Cup, and the Pokal Cup (*rotfl* at Bayern). And naturally the Bundesliga now that it has started! Herr Beyer, my Oma's boyfriend, and I watch the matches together since he has Premiere. It's really more fun than it sounds; he adores me and possibly would like to adopt me, hah!

Stuttgart completely robbed us with that incredibly sketchy penalty kick. Total give-away. But neither team played too well: Stuttgart can't seem to hold it together without Timo and Gomez, while Schalke was unusually physical under Bordon as captain.

Bielefeld is my new baby as far as teams go! I am such a sucker for the lovely blue and whites, and they have the added bonus of beating Wolfsburg.

Michael Ballack was adorable at the Bayern match! Omg, I told my mother Franz Beckenbauer/Micha was my new crack!OTP (and yes, she really does understand what that means =).

The Schalke-Dortmund match next week is giving me much angst. I would love to go but Gelsenkirchen is a little too far (and apparently a little too ugly for my mother). So instead I am hoping to go to Wolfsburg on the 26 August. Then I can mock Magath in person when he loses! (Ach, I should't say that, I cursed us)

In other totally random news: I am in LOVE with the German theme song from Prison Break. I also found the Männer wie wir soundtrack I have searched for forever, a Schalke trikot (soon to have Kuranyi on the back) and got completely lost in a department store.

I wish I knew of an easier place to get internet, but until I do, comment replies will have to wait until I am at an internet cafe. Possibly after I get back from Berlin. I will be going there for 3 or 4 days this week as a birthday present from my mum - it's my birthday today!
Edit: Going to Berlin instead on the 22nd to the 24th! :)

I am really sorry to miss all your entries. Please, if there is something you would like me to read, anything from family news to writing to just a stupid funny story you think will make me laugh, just let me know and I'll check out your journal.

Know that I miss you all even though it can be difficult when I feel so happy to be home.

Tschuß!

Deine Arielle
