Have decided that I'm going to get a damn good start on my Religion and the Founding Fathers series this week, instead of just putting it off till resources fell into my lap. To that end, I checked out three books from the church library yesterday, and have found that only one is really useful.
If you have not heard of this, it's a damn good book: So Help Me God: The Founding Fathers and the First Great Battle Over Church and State, by Forrest Church. I'm not reading the whole thing (because then I wouldn't get any work done), but wow. There's so much that's so relevant to now.
For instance, that wacko minister who demanded penance from whoever in his congregation had voted for Obama? Foreshadowing of that in one Rev. Aaron Bancroft from Boston, who declared that Thomas Jefferson's possible election would constitute "no less than rebellion against God." Wheee!
Y'know what would be cool? If the History Channel would spin off a new channel that concentrated solely on American history. I'm not sure I would ever turn such a channel off...
And if my mom actually gets me my favorite Christmas present of a Barnes & Noble gift card (instead of trying to get fancy, when I ask her every single year for that), I'm going to own this book. Hell, even if I don't get a bookstore card, I'm still going to own this book. Really really good read.
