Exercising Freedom of Finger

Yeah, so what's the best thing you might do on a Sunday, one might ask. Go to church? Meditate over your Bible or spend time with a charity? Sleep in? Work in the garden? Do some housework? Watch The Mummy on TV and make fun of the abomination that AlMiles made out of the third movie?

Or, you could stand along Lindsay St and hold up signs that say JESUS LOVES YOU (which is fine, cool, cool) and ABORTION IS MURDER and ABORTION is BAD FOR WOMEN!!

We saw them on the way to do grocery shopping, and the first finger was a spur of the moment decision, but we went a bit farther down, and there was a LINE of them right next to the turn lane, so another finger appeared, waved back and forth. And then, after we'd gone down the next street a few feet, Holy Shit, MORE OF THEM. FINGER numbah three!

So it's all good. They had the freedom of speech to hold up hateful signs, and I had the freedom of speech to respond with a wordless salute. It started to drizzle later, so they went home. Such was their conviction. (By comparison I'm remembered me and my little Feminist Majority group standing in the fucking freezing cold in Washington, DC when we went to the 30th anniversary of Roe v Wade, and how our tiny little president got bulled that night by big, strong prolife guys at the candlelight vigil for women who have died.)

I also saw an SUV today that said first:

Liberalism is NOT a Family Value.

(Well, I'd argue that it's more of an organizing principle of thought, and that conservatism is similarly not defined as a family value either.)

And then:

Guns don't kill people. Abortion clinics kill people.

So Sam asked if it wouldn't count if she shot the driver. And I figure yeah, it doesn't count. It's a lovely sentiment, though, and it makes me think that although I know that there are sane people around who are against abortion (my sister, and marginally so, my mother), the person with this bumper sticker is one of the fucknutters that thinks that gunning down abortion providers is A-OK.

pro-choice, being mean, feminism
