Anniversary Cake!

I had the great honor of making the cake for amywithani and palecur's 10th Anniversary party this past weekend.

I made a 3-tiered cake and shaped it to look like a flower-strewn hill. Then I put in a path (made of candy rocks) that wound its way to the top. I called it "The Path of Life":

The cake topper for their wedding was Pinky and the Brain, so I carried the theme through.

The back of the hill, with the buttercream flowers I made. I'm still working on my roses.

This was the first cake I've baked from absolute scratch. (I've made some Vegan cupcakes, but this was the first full cake.) The cake was banana, but each tier had a different filling: strawberry, dulce de leche, and chocolate. The frosting was crusted buttercream, also from scratch. Thankfully, it didn't break my mixer this time!

It was my first attempt at shaping a cake. I think I may have over-cut the bottom layer, but I was pretty satisfied with the end result.

Confession: the cake slid apart on the drive to the party. I had to pull over en route and do some emergency work to the top tier to keep it from splitting open and being ruined. (I stuck the tiers to their support plates with glucose, as I am supposed to. I guess I didn't use enough, since they separated ... but apparently I'd put on just enough that I couldn't push them back into place!)

Luckily, I had brought an Emergency Repair Kit with me, so I was able to patch it all up when I arrived. Hopefully nobody noticed - at least, nobody who didn't watch me caulking up the frosting cracks and re-doing the top of the path! Happily, everyone seemed to like the cake, both in appearance and taste!

Meanwhile, the party was SO much fun! Matthew and I got in plenty of dancing, which we were highly complimented on by a few people. I also had fun being one of Paul's 'backup girls' while he danced to "Addicted to Love". ;-) And how many black-tie affairs does one go to where there are Lego sets to be put together? (Sorry we couldn't finish the Jawa Sandcrawler, guys! We tried!)

Happy Anniversary, Ami and Paul! Thank you for letting me be a part of it!
