“I am going to throw up,” said the student miserably. Professor Abraham Van Helsing chuckled as he sat down next to the young man, who was turning a rather unbecoming shade of pale green.

“What makes you so certain that you are to be throwing up, hm? You are not even begun yet.”

The student, a fellow of twenty, gave his beloved mentor a doleful look. “I already feel queasy. I’m not going to make it through this. Can’t I just write a paper?”

The professor laughed. He knew he shouldn’t, but the pleading on his student’s face was so unlike his normal determined expression that it seemed almost comical. The professor put a hand on the fellow’s shoulder. “You spent too much time always with the books and the papers. You need experience with the people.”

“Then I’ll go out to the pub with some of the other boys, or I’ll write Art and see if he’ll come over here for his holiday. I can already smell it and we’re not even inside the room yet and oh dear me…” The boy’s voice trailed off as he suppressed another wave of nausea.

Professor Van Helsing clapped his favorite student’s back and hauled him to his feet. “Come now, Jack my boy; you are the smartest student I have here now, and you know all your facts as well as I do. You will be fine when you stop being such a…what do the English say, ninny? Come on then.”

Miraculously, the young man managed to hold down his stomach contents through the entirety of his first autopsy. However, as soon as he emerged from the chemical scents permeating the surgical theater and into the fresh air of the courtyard, the poor fellow passed out. Professor Van Helsing smiled and examined the student’s work on the body. His grin growing ever wider, he turned to the ledger where he recorded notes for grading later on. Next to “Seward, John” he wrote “Excellent. Consideration of early passing with full License.”
