here. Inspired by the song "Never Saw Blue", which is my official The Little Boy/The Little Girl ship song.
She was always aware of color. After the drab greys and browns of Latvia, and the same in the tenements, it was as though she were discovering color for the first time every time she saw it. Tateh smiled to himself when he watched her staring up at the sky. He asked her why she did. It’s so Blue, she replied.
When they went to Atlantic City, she no longer looked at the sky so much. It was still blue, certainly, but it was pale compared to the sea. She did not remember much of the sea from their crossing of the Atlantic to America; Tateh had kept her below desk for safety as much as he could. As Tateh filmed his movies and conducted his business, he never worries about where she was. He always knew he could find her sitting on the beach, playing in the sand and gazing at the water. He asked her why she did. It’s so Blue, she said. He smiled and said, All right then.
She found a companion. The Little Boy had come to Atlantic City with his family, and soon each found the other a good company for their games in the sand. They were building palaces on the beach when the sky and sea both turned grey and rain began to pelt them. Come on, said The Little Boy, grabbing her hand. We’ll stay drier under the pier.
They crouched together, smiling and laughing at how wet they had gotten in the rain. It was there that she happened to glance at his eyes. He stared back. Her smile faded to an expression of awe, and she did not hear Tateh calling her from a distance.
His eyes were the bluest Blue she’d ever seen.
