Pain. From an evolutionary standpoint, it's necessary. Essential, even, to develop conditioned responses to potentially dangerous and hazardous situations. A child touches a hot object, they feel pain and they remember. The mind creates neurological pathways to associate hot with pain and the child learns not to touch.
