Pain. From an evolutionary standpoint, it's necessary. Essential, even, to develop conditioned responses to potentially dangerous and hazardous situations. A child touches a hot object, they feel pain and they remember. The mind creates neurological pathways to associate hot with pain and the child learns not to touch. There's a cruelty, but nature's lessons often are the cruelest.
The aversion to pain is a unifying trait, common to all life. From the smallest to the largest of beings, it is something we all have in common. Despite our differences, none of us wants to feel pain.
And yet we find it inflicted on us with distressing regularity, often at the hands of our fellow citizens. As a member of the Police Force, I see it all too regularly. It's unfortunate that in a place where we all have so much in common, we often turn on each other when we should stand together. History teaches that time and time again, those that stand together in the face of chaos survive. Those who do not, fall.
I can't rightly call this an essay, I've not done the proper research or cited any sources and as an academic work it's a far cry from my usual standards. It's really more of a collection of observations, things I've learned while watching the different species of the universe, both here and back at home. I do hope that there are some that find this useful, even if just for a moment's distraction from their day.
I can only hope this earns me one of those tokens, just as we wish to alleviate our own suffering, we should also strive to alleviate it for others. As I said, those who stand together in the face of chaos survive.
