What do you mean? Relative to sea level I'm at 353m (not that high for Austria) and relative to street level I'm on the fourth floor (pretty high for Austria. Also a pain in the ass for carrying up groceries.)
I've never heard of people doing that, which is weird considering Austria must be full of people baking at 5000ft. Do you change the temperature or anything else as well? My dad does a lot of mountaineering, and he once had freshly baked cake at around 23,000ft (in the Himalayas) where the boiling point is something ridiculous like 70°C/170°F. That must take some serious baking skills.
Yeah, a higher temperature, and usually an extra egg or some flour, and less sugar and fat. Apparently things don't rise well.
Hmmm, are there any places in Austria at or below sea level? There are some here in the U.S., and perhaps the extreme difference between low elevation and mountainous places accounts for the recipe differences.
I wouldn't have thought it needed so much adjusting!
The lowest place is apparently at 114m (374ft) and the highest hamlet is at 1653m (5420ft), but I guess most people live at between 300 and 800m. I'm from a village with an altitude of 700m and still use the same recipes now that I live at 350m. How high up is the US on average?
Highest US city: 12,060 ft Lowest: -184 ft Average: I'm having a hard time finding an average for the entire country, but the lowest state elevation on average is Florida at 100 ft, and the highest is Colorado, at 6,800 ft.
Are you at high altitude, by chance?
