Revelation
It was Hermione who noticed first, and tugged on the edge of Ron's robe, tearing him away from his and Harry's in-depth discussion of the Daily Prophet's reporting of that year's Quidditch World Cup as the three of them stepped off the Hogwarts Express on to the platform.
"Wha?" said Ron, casting about wildly to see what Hermione was pointing at. "Herminone, what's so important..." He broke off as he finally followed the line of Hermionie's finger to where Crabb and Goyle were acting very strangely, jumping up and down, waving their arms and yelling. "What's gotten into them?" Ron muttered.
"I don't think it's what gotten into them," Hermione murmured, "It's what's gotten into him." She'd continued walking forward until the three of them were parallel with Crabb and Goyle. She pointed again, indicating what Crabb and Goyle were shouting at. A stock-still, shell-shocked Draco Malfoy. He was staring straight ahead of him, completely oblivious to his toadies' theatrics. The expression on his face was one of mingled horror, wonder, and grim realization.
Harry experienced a shock of realisation himself and followed Draco's gaze. Hermione looked at him quizzically, then her eyes widened and she nodded. "So that's it," she said softly.
"What's it?" burst Ron angrily. "Would you please explain why - unless I've gone completly mad and I'm imagining it - you both look sorry for Malfoy?"
Harry turned to face Ron, and Ron bit his lip as his heart sank at the sadness in his best friend's smile. "The thestrals, Ron. He can see them."

This is definitely part of A Malfoy's Duty, but I think it stands alone just fine. I am terribly amused that the spell checker suggested "Australians" as one of the possible corrections for
thestrals.
