Part V

~Answer~

***

Ruka was not by nature a light sleeper, but he was a creature of habit. Hence why in the morning, his body turned and tossed even as his bones ached with exhaustion. Eventually his body won out so Ruka cracked open eyelid and found himself looking at a lamp that wasn't his.

Drowsily rubbing his eyes, he straightened his back and turned to find Sakito sleeping peacefully on hits stomach, and a duvet covered mound that he assumed was Ni~ya.

Ruka looked down at the both of them as last night came back to him in bits and pieces. The drummer wasn't the kind to associate sex with love, but he couldn't help feeling some faint flickers of emotions as he watched them sleep. Satisfaction, tenderness as well as wistfulness that it had come to an end.

“I can’t stay, I’d better go,” he thought. Ruka carefully made his way out of bed, silently put his clothes back on and tread noiselessly out the door. Picking up his mobile and coat from where he left it on the couch, he headed for the front door.

“You are certainly up early…”

Ruka nearly jumped out his skin at Ni~ya’s voice. Spinning around on his heel, he saw the bassist with his feet up on the kitchen table, a newspaper in his hand a steaming cup of coffee by his foot.

“I certainly hope that you are going out to buy breakfast,” Ni~ya said with a hard edge to his voice. “Where are you going Ruka?” Ni~ya grabbed his forearm and hauled him into the kitchen with surprising strength.

“Seriously, you aren’t expecting me to stay are you? Morning after speeches are something I’m shit at Ni~ya,” Ruka said, with more conviction than he felt.

Ni~ya gave a sardonic smile, as if what Ruka said had amused him.

“Morning after? Do you think so little of us, your friends, that you’d think we would sleep with you and then act like nothing happened?” Ni~ya said, his voice getting louder with each word.

“We more than just work together Ruka! We share our lives! So much so that we see each other more than we do our own families!”

“Don't fucking yell at me Ni~ya,” Ruka said testily. “I can’t talk sense with you when you are like this.”
Ruka turned to stalk away only to have Ni~ya grab him again.

“Don’t leave!” Ni~ya said angrily. By this time Ruka just as mad, and raised his free hand to strike the bassist only to have the younger man catch his wrist and kiss his pulse point like he did the night before.

“Don’t leave,” Ni~ya repeated in a softer tone.

“Why?” Ruka said quietly, breaking free of Ni~ya’s grasp and taking a step back.

“Because,” Ni~ya faltered in the intensity that Ruka put into that one word and ran his hand through his hair to compose himself.

“Because, Sakito would be upset if you do, and I made him a promise that I would always make him happy.”

Ruka was taken aback to say the least. When they told him they were a couple, he never expected their feelings….especially Ni~ya’s ….to run so deep.

For a brief moment in time, he had thought he might have had a chance with either of them.

“You love him Ni~ya, that much is obvious. There is no room in a relationship for another person, you can’t split love three ways,” Ruka said with a serious timbre in his voice.

Deep inside Ni~ya knew that Ruka was making perfect sense. But nothing in their lives had ever gone the conventional route, and there had been something about last night that had seemed so….right.

Taking a deep breath, Ni~ya stepped forward so that he was standing toe-to-toe with Ruka so that he could look at him straight in the eye.

“I do love him,” Ni~ya said placing a hand on Ruka’s cheek.

“And he loves me,” he continued as he slowly moved forward, forcing a suddenly compliant Ruka back until the older man was pressed against the breakfast table.

“But we, for some reason or anther, really like you,” Ni~ya finished quietly, their faces bare millimeters apart.

“What are you talking about? You are so intent on being the dominant one, of being so in control, that you won’t even let your guard down for me to kiss you,” Ruka said with surprising feeling.

Ni~ya answered by closing the gap between them and kissing Ruka full on the mouth. Over and over he pressed their lips together with a gentleness that the drummer would have never expected.

“Why all of a sudden?” Ruka murmured in the midst of their kiss.

“Because I didn't realise I wanted to do this until I saw you about to leave,” Ni~ya replied, running the tip of his tongue over the vicious bite mark he had inflicted on Ruka last night.

“What about…” Ruka paused as his eye flicked in the direction of the bedroom.

“This doesn't do a thing to change my love for Sakito,” Ni~ya hooked his thumbs on the loops of Ruka’s jeans.

“But I won’t deny that I am attracted to you. I thought sleeping with you would make it go away, but a part of me still wants you,” Ni~ya said huskily. “A part of me wants to push you, to see if you will submit, to…”

“Challenge you,” Ruka finished with a dark whisper. “I’ve always wanted to challenge you.”

This time, it was Ruka that pulled Ni~ya closer for a kiss causing the younger man to groan deep in his throat.
He willingly parted his lips to allow Ruka’s tongue deeper inside his mouth, aggressively tangling with his.

But then Ruka shocked him when he dug his teeth into Ni~ya’s lip causing him to jump back with a cry of surprise. As they stared at each other, both men could feel lust fill the space between them.

“This time, I’m the one on top,” Ni~ya said a hard look in his eyes. “So spread your legs Ruka.”

Ruka grinned wickedly as he quickly pulled his shirt over his head and rested on the edge of the table.

“Make me….”

From the darkened hallway, Sakito watched the both of them with a satisfied smirk playing across his lips.

Six months later

“Goodnight, great show,” said a technician who was dismantling the lights.

“Goodnight, see you all around,” called out another who was dragging a load of video recording equipment behind him.

“Yes! Another tour finished and in the books,” Yomi remarked cheerfully folding his arms behind his head as the five of them made their way to the covered back of the arena. Since all the activity was going on at the front of the hall, this section was blissfully quiet.

“Yes, but that doesn't mean work is over. We have all those photoshoots, interviews, not to mention fittings for the new costumes. Of course, there is all that Sendai Komatsu stuff to do as well” Sakito reminded him, lighting a cigarette as he riffled through his dayplanner.

The rest of Nightmare groaned in chorus.

“Killjoy,” Ni~ya scolded as rolled his eyes at him. “God you can be anal at time Sakito. We have a whole month off. The way we’ve been working that’s a fricking honeymoon cruise. And I need it, I’m sore as a donkey’s arse.”

“You certainly look like it sometimes,” Ruka remarked wryly, neatly dodging Ni~ya’s punch to his shoulder.

“Hey guys, I have a suggestion.”

All of them turned to look at their vocalist who was shifting his weight between the balls of his feet.

“Why don't we go out tomorrow, just the five of us, just Nightmare. We haven’t done that in a while,” Yomi had the decency to look sheepish as he knew that it was mostly due to him.

“Sounds like a great idea Yomi,” Hitsugi said playfully ruffling his hair. “One more outing to remind us what each other looks like before we go our separate ways.”

The rest of them nodded in agreement.

“Great,” Yomi said enthusiastically. “Well, it looks like my ride is here,” he said as he pointed to Kyo leaning against the hood of his car as he smoked a cigarette. Rushing up to him, Yomi all but jumped in his arms and kissed him on the nose.

Sakito observed Ruka’s expression at this exchange and exhaled slowly when he saw it hadn’t changed. It hadn’t for months, but it always made him feel better to check.

Ruka’s smile had just become that, a smile, without a trace of its former resignation.

“As is mine,” Hitsugi said as he saw Aki mulling about, his hair still twisted up in a top-knot and his eyes darkened with eyeliner having just come from his own show.

Aki, as always was a man of few words, didn't say anything and just gathered Hitsugi in his arms and kissed him hard.

“Where’s your car babe?” Hitsugi asked, a little shy as Aki’s openly affectionate gesture.

“Something went wrong with it, so Mao gave me a lift. Hey Kyo,” Aki said turning to face the blonde, “Mind if we bum a ride?”

Kyo eyed the both of them warily.

“Only if the place you’re going is not that godforsaken hellhole ten miles out of town of town that I had to drive you last time,” he said pointedly. “And no kissy-huggy in the back, I just cleaned the seats.”

“Why? Did Yomi stain them last time?” Aki responded with a grin as he and his boyfriend agilely jumped in the backseat just before Kyo hit the gas.

Once they were out of sight, the three remaining Nightmare members walked sedately to their cars, a comfortable silence between them. Everything had become comfortable in the six months the three of them had been together.

During that time they practically lived in each other pockets, their nights ending in a satisfied tangle of limbs. But there were times that Ruka’s presence proved invaluable. He was there to fill the void with Ni~ya when Sakito was away on writing trips, and vice versa when Ni~ya went home for long periods at a stretch.

Sakito shot both of them a slight smile.

“So, what are we going to do for the rest of the night?” Sakito asked.

“Get drunk and have sex?” both Ruka and Ni~ya answered at the same time causing Sakito to laugh.

“You both have such one track minds,” Sakito admonished fondly as he slipped an arm around Ni~ya’s waist.

“But it does sound like a good idea, you up for it Ruka?”

The drummer was about to answer with an “of course” when his vibrating phone stopped him. Taking it out of his pocket, he flipped it open and read the message. As a smile spread across his face, Sakito felt his heart drop a fraction.

“Is it Kai?” Sakito said quietly. Ruka looked up with a slightly guilty nod.

“Yeah, he says that practice finished early because Ruki suddenly felt sick. He wants to know if I’m free for a drink. ” Ruka said putting his phone back into his pocket.

Kai. Sakito had never figured Ruka to like someone like Kai but when they had met three months ago, the sparks had been instantaneous. It seemed that even steadfastly cynical Ruka could be won over by Kai’s irrepressible charm.

Ever since then, both Sakito and Ni~ya had noticed a slight change in the drummer. He still was at their apartment almost constantly, but would have his own plans once a week.

But he had never once turned them down for a date with Kai.

Ruka wasn't blind. He knew that by saying yes to Kai, it would irrevocably change their relationship. After taking this step, there would be no going back.

“It's okay guys, I can always tell him another night,” Ruka said, his casual tone sounding a little forced at the edges.

Sakito swallowed hard. He looked down as he felt both Ruka’s and Ni~ya’s eyes on him, waiting for an answer, knowing that they would defer to his decision.

The guitarist opened his mouth and closed it again. He knew he should tell Ruka to go, to spend more time with Kai because he could see it turn into something serious. But a part of him just couldn't, just wouldn't, break up their support structure.

“Don’t be silly Ruka, you should go be with him,” Ni~ya finally said quietly.

Sakito’s head jerked up as he looked at the bassist who was gazing at him with a sad, but knowing look in his dark eyes. Ni~ya had always known, since the first day, that while what they had between them felt right, it had never felt permanent. And Sakito realised that now and was grateful.

He may have been the one holding the reins in this unusual relationship but he needed Ni~ya to be the one to cut the strings.

“Ni’s right Ruka, you should go,” Sakito said his voice calm but with an iron grip on Ni~ya’s hand.

At one point, they had invited Ruka into their relationship because he needed them to get him over his hurt. Now the tables had turned and it had become the two of them that had come to rely on his presence. So it wasn't entirely fair to for them to keep him hanging on when he had a chance to be happy.

Ruka’s eyes softened as he took in the both of them. Stepping closer to Sakito, Ruka lifted the guitarist’s chin and kissed him, softly brushing their lips together as he tried to pour out in that gesture how much he meant to him.

“Thank you, “ Ruka said once he had pulled away. “Really, thanks. For everything.”

“Our door is always open Ruka, remember that,” Sakito said, affectionately tucking the drummer’s hair behind his ears.

Ruka nodded and then turned to face Ni~ya who had been watching this exchange quietly.

“See you tomorrow?” Ruka said giving the bassist’s shoulder a slight squeeze. Ni~ya simply smiled and shrugged his shoulders.

Ruka turned to leave, only to change his direction mid-step with a determined look in his eyes. He grabbed Ni~ya by the collar and crushed their lips together, which the younger man responded eagerly.

Ni~ya knew he would always remember that kiss. The heat and the strength, sliding down his throat like bitter coffee, and with it, Ruka cementing a small inch of himself in Ni~ya’s heart.

“See you both later,” Ruka said, stepping away and towards his car. As he pressed the key fob to unlock it, he looked up at them with a smile.

“I love you both,” he said quietly before getting in the car and starting the engine. Sakito and Ni~ya both waved at him as he drove away, the guitarist leaning on his lover’s shoulder.

Once he was gone, they both walked in silence holding each other’s hand as they walked to Ni~ya’s car.

“Are you sad?” Ni~ya finally asked, turning so he could cradle the elegant line of Sakito’s jaw in his hand. Sakito shook his head as he kissed Ni~ya’s cheek.

“Not sad, wistful maybe. But I think its an ego thing,” Sakito said with a small laugh. “I have to admit, it was nice having him around, even nicer to be the center of attention between two men. Its like….being spoiled for vanilla because you only want Rocky Road.”

“Are you saying I’m vanilla Sakito,” Ni~ya said dryly. Sakito laughed for real this time, slipping both his arms around the bassist’s waist.

“No way Ni, if anything you are one of those ridiculously expensive imported ice creams with a shitload of booze inside, “ Sakito said, planting a small kiss on Ni~ya’s lips.

“I’ll be fine,” Sakito added quietly. Ni~ya pulled him closer so that Sakito’s head was resting on his shoulder.

“We’ll be just fine,” Ni~ya emphasised, gently stroking his boyfriend’s hair.

“I won’t lie, it will be nice to have you all to myself again. I just….I just hope that I’m enough for you now,” Ni~ya suddenly asked, a spark of uncertainty rearing its head beneath his cool façade.

Sakito nodded, his head still buried in the older man’s shoulder.

“The question is, am I enough for you?” Sakito replied, his own uncertainty masked by his teasing tone.

Ni~ya chuckled and kissed Sakito’s hair.

“Sakito, I think sometimes you are more than I deserve.”
