"I want to fling you down among the rosebushes and have my wicked way with you."
Sounds romantically smutty and when I read that I felt like swooning just a bit. However, I think if Dustin said that to me in real life, I'd be like "WTF?! That's not cool. You're being ridiculous. I'm going to go play Eternal Sonata now."
I like tawdry romance novels that I know are supposed to be tawdry romance novels. I think that is why I like Masque of the Black Tulip better than Secret History of the Pink Carnation. Pink Carnation, I thought was going to be a major spy thriller--a female counterpart to the Scarlet Pimpernel. It turned out to be little more than a tawdry romance novel interspersed with some adventure and spying; I got really angry after finishing. I hated the heroine, Amy. I hate Henrietta (Black Tulip) too, but much less than Amy. Jane is the only competent and awesome one and hardly gets any mention, though rumor has it Lauren Willig is supposed to be writing Jane's story. I hate the characters in skeezy romance novels, but I love romance and smut, especially when artfully mixed with metaphors. I think I'm developing another crush on a fictional character--Miles Dorrington. After two semesters of reading theory, tons of Elizabethan history books, 19th century lit and poetry, not to mention starting the summer off heavy with Tam Lin, I'm in the mood for frivolous, romantic, smut.
Lauren Willig not only makes bank as a lawyer, but from these highly addicting, wonderfully smutty, historical romance novels. And she's young! New summer goal: write a tawdry romance set in Medieval times with a competent and non-simpering female character. LOL.
