Writer's Block: Folktales of the City

I don't necessarily have a favorite urban legend because the ones I remember most are the really scary ones. There are three that really get to me and make me paranoid all the time: "The Hook", "The Boyfriend's Death," and the "Killer in the Backseat." I've never been exactly fooled by an urban legend, but once I was in a scenario with Dustin that made me think I could end up in one.

The story begins in the summer between my junior and senior year; I was staying in Shelbyville with Dustin for the summer. One night, I was driving in my car with Dustin when he told me he had a surprise for me. He gave me directions to a subdivision. It was a pretty big subdivision, there was some construction going on, we past all of it, then he told me to pull off in this little cul-de-sac area that was semi-secluded. I parked the car and was like "Okay, now what?" Dustin said, "Turn off the car." I was a little wierded out but did what he said anyway. I was getting just a teeny bit paranoid at this point, thinking "Where's the surprise? Are we meeting somebody here who's going to bring this present or whatever? This is a really wierd place to meet somebody."

Then Dustin reached over me, and I had no idea what he was about to do. My overactive imagination was set off, and million crazy, scary, things went through my mind. Two things I vaguely remember thinking were he was going to let some crazy murderer in the car or he was going to force me into having sex or something like that. I freaked out and started screaming "What are you doing?! Stop!" Turns out all he was trying to do was turn off the car lights. Then he was like "Calm down and just watch." I managed to calm down and what I saw were the blinking lights of fireflies. Dustin had tried to make an attempt at being romantic and took me to a place where after dark you could see a million fireflies and it was so bright it looked like fireworks.

Not that I didn't trust Dustin, but what was I to think in a situation like that?! Hello the first thing the couple starts to do in the urban legends is make out or have sex and then one of them ends up dead! I guess I take my urban legends a little too seriously. Adding to that, I always look into my car in my backseat before I get into it. I still get nervous every once in a while driving by myself at night. ZOMG, great idea to go read up on these and several others to refresh my memory for this post. Now, I've successfully creeped myself out and will likely be up until Dustin comes home. Thank you LJ writer's block prompt and the internet for linking one urban legend to twenty more and way to go self for reading all the different stories and variations.
