Ever since the night Joe died, Alex Eames had lived in fear of late-night phone calls.

For years, any time a ring split the still midnight air, she jerked awake and clawed frantically for the phone on her bedside table, answered it breathlessly, afraid of what she might hear. And as a cop, she got her share of those moments of terror.

But after a time, the habit changed. When the ring sounded, her phone was no longer the thing that she frantically reached for.

When waking sharply from a deep sleep, she reached for him first. To know that he was alive and he was there beside her, safe. On less of a hair-trigger, he often slept soundly through the first few rings, and she would wake him up. And by the third ring, she would answer her phone, relieved. As long as she knew he was safe, she no longer dreaded the rings.
