Summary: After the vampires took the world over, reducing humans to be a "lower race", newborn vampire Siwon has to deal with the harsh reality of being a night creature...but also discovers that even those said to be soulless creatures have their own little spot of happiness in this world, no matter what happens.
…hungry… He was so, so hungry…
Why didn’t his clan members let him feed? He was too young to hunt down his own food, wasn’t he? He had never left the mansion before. Good thing that he was blessed with nocturnal sight… or be would have ended up lost by now.
How was he supposed to find something to eat in such a desert wasteland?
Wait…what is it, right in front of him? Did he really saw something?
He blinked a few times, wondering if hunger was blurring his sight… but no, it was still there… A man? Yes. A very handsome man on top of that. Golden skin, delicate features, high cheekbones…. What he is doing here, alone, away from any trace of civilisation?
He had to act, it was his only chance. He rushed in front of the stranger, he looked into those soft, teary eyes… why is he crying? That’s strange, because he’s also smiling… Hunger got the best of him, however, and he grabbed the other’s head, pulling it sideways before sinking his long fangs into the soft skin of the now exposed neck, the man not even fighting to get free.
“There you are…”
Siwon woke up with a start, eyes nervously looking around, until realised that he was in his bedroom. Why was he still having visions of that night? It happened more than a week ago!
Being a young vampire was far from being an easy thing. A month ago he woke up in this huge mansion, body aching all over and eyes abused by the new found light, remembering nothing but his first name. Siwon. The only information in his head aside from that deep burning in the skin of his neck… which he realised later to be the place where he got bitten when he got turned… Ever since, he was trying to get used to this way of life. At least he had some help… and help always came knocking at his door.
“Siwonnie? Are you awake?”
“Yes…”
Entering the room was one of the most important members of the clan that “adopted” Siwon. Leeteuk was the long-time lover of the clan’s leader and happened to be Siwon’s “Parent”, in other words, the one who turned him into a vampire. He took his parental role with enthusiasm, maybe a little bit to much since it was his first “Child” since his own transformation, one or two years ago.
“Slept well?”
“Not really, keep dreaming of THAT night”
“Your first prey, you have to be proud!!”
Preys…
That is what humans are nowadays. Nothing more. This is the way things work ever since vampires decided to get out of hiding, gaining power over the world and reducing humanity to live in what was now known as “human zones”. The rest of the land is claimed by vampires, as each clan of those night creatures is in charge of one human zone. The good point in this invasion? Many animal races got a chance to grow in numbers… but the humans were the one seeing the way to extinction…
Due to the importance of the vampire population compared to humans, it had been decided that each vampire would feed off a single human until the death of the mortal. That way, the human race wouldn’t be exterminated. Every vampire had had his own “prey”… no one else could feed off that human, aside from newly turned vampires before they got preys of their own.
A week ago, Leeteuk had sent Siwon to go and find a prey of his own. Even if the human zone of Seoul is renowned to be quite big, many in the clan thought that Siwon was too young. However, when he came back home with the lithe form of the man he had just bitten in his arms, he impressed everyone.
“I found him outside human zones… I did nothing…”
“You managed to bite him without him trying to escape!”
“I felt as if… he was waiting for me…”
Leeteuk’s smile made Siwon frown, as he wondered what was going on. Chuckling, the Parent ruffled his hair.
“You are still young my Wonnie. One day, you will understand. Now, I think that your prey needs you…”
Siwon sighed as we pulled himself out of his bed, Leeteuk laughing at his manners. Of all Parents, the one to turn him into a vampire had to be that cheerful one? Well, it was better than ending up with a brute as a Parent. But one thing was sure: he had to go check on his prey.
Preys weren’t living with the ones who fed from them. While the vampires were living in the clan’s mansion itself, the preys spent whole days and nights in some kind of dormitory, placed in the basement, underground and hidden. Some older clan members called it the “Refrigerator”. Somehow the term disgusted Siwon, and Leeteuk was also against it.
Once dressed, the youngest of the clan climbed down until he reached the preys’ living space. He paused when he entered, trying to locate his prey by the way Leeteuk taught him to: his specific smell and his aura. Surprisingly, he found the man quickly enough. He was sleeping soundly in his stiff bed. Siwon had been warned that preys could get really feverish and prone to sleep after being bitten for the first time. Leeteuk had explained the whole process to him, but he still wasn’t sure about it. The only thing he knew was that he had to check everyday on the one he would feed from. When he placed his hand on his prey’s forehead, he realised that he man was indeed burning.
“Losing your prey already? How lame.”
Turning toward the voice, Siwon spotted Sungmin, a fellow clan member known for his habit of changing preys all the time. It was apparently a miracle if he kept a prey for more than two months. Siwon had heard that his preys were recognisable by the pink necklaces they were wearing… until they were released and sent back home, only to be replaced quickly.
“I’m not losing him, he’s going through Adaptation!”
“Well, dear little Wonnie, don’t think that being the Child of Leeteuk will keep you from the everlasting shame of a first prey dying through Adaptation…”
As the other vampire left in a way too much theatrical for the younger to find it esthetical, Siwon shivered. He knew that he couldn’t risk losing his prey now. He was going through a rough phase that Leeteuk had called Adaptation. Apparently the body of the prey was readying itself to have its blood sucked out often. That was why preys were sleeping a lot and were prone to fever after their first biting…
Speaking of which, Siwon checked his prey’s forehead once more. He was truly burning. With a sigh, he rushed upstairs, in the “kitchen” were they kept food for the preys… because they needed to feed too, after all. After picking up a bottle of water, he climbed back down, being by the bedside of his prey in only a few moments. Sitting the sleeping form, he opened the bottle and helped the liquid flow through the apparently dry throat, the man only waking up slightly. Once the bottle was emptied, though, the fever had calmed down enough for the man to be fully awake. There, he was smiling again, looking into Siwon’s eyes with a strange expression.
“I guess… I am your prey now?”
The question surprised the vampire, but it was stronger than him, he answered:
“Yes, you are my prey…”
“Okay then”
The simple answer struck Siwon. “Okay”? That’s all? As if everything was normal in becoming the prey of a very young vampire! Were all humans thinking like that… as if the only reason they were living was to become preys one day or another? Or was it only this one?
He had so many questions, but the man was falling asleep once more…
“Hey, wait!”
…but it was too late, he was already off for another world. The night creature watching for the side of the bed surprised himself into hoping that he had sweet dreams.
When he came back to the upper floor, back into the magnificent part of the mansion, marble and velvet all around, Siwon found his Parent with two other people. One of those he already knew quite well, it was the Leader of the clan, Kangin. He was apparently a very old vampire, amongst the first listed in the history of the race. He didn’t fit with the regular image of a vampire… he had a different kind of charisma. He looked a little bit too rough to fit in the stereotype. Members of the clan talked of him as a renowned warrior, also famous for his tolerance to his fellows compared to other Clan Leaders. (That could explain Sungmin’s attitude) However, Siwon sometimes wondered how Leeteuk ended up being linked for eternity with him… They didn’t seem to fit at first look… oh but don’t worry, the young vampire knew very well that they did fit… He spent enough time around them, being the Child of Leeteuk, after all.
The other one, Siwon had never seen him before. It was a man now that he looked at him, but he had his androgynous aspect that made Siwon pause to verify. He was wearing clothes that spoke very clearly of travelling and a sword was attached to waist. Looking at the emblem on the man’s cloak, Siwon found out that he wasn’t part of the clan… another one, then… What clan could it be?
“Siwonnie! There you are!” called out Leeteuk, coming toward him with a big grin before clutching one of his arms.
“humph… Teukie, it’s not because the term for him is “Child” that you have to treat him like one” came Kangin’s grumpy tone.
“But it’s my almost newborn boy! Not even a month old!”
Leeteuk didn’t seem to care about the fact that his “newborn boy” was nearly half a head taller than him….
“Come on Kangin, not turning into a grumpy old man, aren’t you? It’s Teukie’s first Child, you should be happy with him!”
The man was very expressive for sure and from the way he was talking to Kangin, he was as high ranked as him… or he was suicidal.
“Nevermind… Youngster, this is Heechul, he’s my half-brother… and Leader of the nearest posted Clan… He’s an old bunch of trouble, don’t mind him.”
Half-brother? But they were nothing alike!
“Heechul’s Parent was the lover of Kangin’s…” explained Leeteuk in a whisper.
Ah, now that was clear… or not. Siwon would have called them step-brothers… Well… Also, that means that Heechul was quite an old vampire too… Siwon wondered if he had to bow or something. He had no time to do so as the lithe man was now in front of him, holding his face with one hand, so tight that the youngest thought that holes would form in his cheeks.
“Nice choice for a first Child, Teukie… Handsome, strong… will probably make a good Clan Leader if Kangin doesn’t manage to keep one of his Children alive.”
“What was that?!”
Heechul let go of Siwon to laugh at his….step or half brother? Anyway… Siwon didn’t mind. He was more concentrated on the fact that Heechul mentioned that he could become the Clan Leader one day. Kangin couldn’t die, didn’t he? And if kangin was to leave, Leeteuk would be there…. They couldn’t both disappear! Unless there were things he didn’t know about… He was still a newborn vampire, after all.
“Heechul….you are probably here for another reason than pissing Kangin off, I presume?”
“Well… I have bad news.”
Leeteuk and Kangin looked at each other and while the first giggled, the second rolled his eyes, making Siwon frown… the guy had bad news and yet the two most important members of that clan were finding it funny. Seeing his confusion, Leeteuk stopped giggling to explain.
“Heechul can’t come here without saying that sentence… he ALWAYS has bad news!”
“Stop laughing you fools, those are really bad news!”
The bad had his hands on his waist, tapping his foot on the marble floor, utterly disappointed with their attitude. Siwon suddenly told himself that he didn’t want to have that man as his own Clan Leader…
“Well, what is it?” grumbled Kangin.
“My clan got destroyed.”
“WHAT?!”
“You heard me right… They got all slaughtered.”
Heechul bit his lip, long fangs clearly showing. Siwon was sure that if he wasn’t this proud, the man would have cried. Leeteuk went to hug him, patting his hair quickly. Kangin looked like lightning fell on him.
“Who? When? What?.... How did you survive?”
“The damn Children of the Empire…”
The Empire. That was a term Siwon knew about. Leeteuk had talked to him about it. It was how vampires talked about the group that led them into overpowering humans. They had no particularity other than what they did in the history of vampires. They weren’t royalty or nothing…. They were only respected. They had the role of stopping wars between clans and rule out problems… Why would their very own Children go and destroy a whole clan?
“…that little bastard who wears my name… said that there couldn’t be two of us… He’s still jealous that Jessica is my bloodmate…”
Bloodmate? What is that? Siwon had never heard the term before. Another questioning eyebrow-move and Leeteuk showed him to wait, that he would explain everything later.
“Speaking of Jessica, where is she?” asked a worried Leeteuk.
“I was lucky enough… I had a bad feeling, so I sent her to the Clan in which her sister is… Our treasures went with her.”
“That was close” sighed Kangin while passing a hand in his hair
“Yeah… I don’t know what I can do… I managed to fight them because I’m superior in all points. We are at the top of the race’s family tree…”
“The Empire are afraid of us… They highly respect us two because we are the only surviving Children of the Original Couple… I don’t know why their children would go against their parents’ ways this abruptly…”
“I don’t know either.…but I do know that they aim to claim Seoul. Your clan is in danger, Kangin… especially you, Teukie and even more…”
All heads turned toward Siwon.
Him?
