Assignment #1: Commmunication Competence
While taking the COmmunications Skills self-assesment test, I was surprised on how simple all of the questions seemed to be. I was more suprised at my result, which was 65, which, according to the test, was average but could use some improvement. To be considered an average communicator was something that surprised me, because I don't feel that as a communicator, I do very well at all. I felt the quiz was easily manipulatable.
While taking this accessment, I felt that I was more keen to agrue and not listen than I am to be quiet and pay attention to what the other person has to say. I have a tendency to interrupt people, and noticed that interruption is a horrible way to listen to someone, because its proof that you aren't listening to them at all. It also made me wonder about the type of communication people actually recieve from me and if its as positive as the accessment test stated, or as negatively as I view my own communication.
From this experience, I would try to make sure I learn to keep my temper down, and keep a calm and head and listen before drawing conclusions. I think that I scored lower on the accessment, because of my listening skills. I am very good at describing and making sure my point is across, but very rarely to I seem to look to others for their opinions.
