Project Runway S13, Ep 12

So I’m ready to see how things go this week - I kind of want to see Char knock it out of the park because I just don’t care about the other designers. Go Char, give me a reason to believe!

So this is a very odd episode, as it’s like a big jumble of puzzle pieces - and they’re all from different puzzles. First, Tim wakes them up to meet up on the hotel roof. They have an amazing view. And today our product placement is Lexus. The designers are tossed in the cars so they can go through the streets of NYC for a street chic challenge - every day of the week, NYC streets are full of the fashionable and chic. The designers have to scope out street looks in The Lexus … really? Isn’t it easier to find a street look ON the streets? But oh, hey, for scoping out their looks all the designers are seen OUT of the cars. On the streets. Go figure. But in the interviews, the designers are all saying wonderful things and all kinds of crap about the car. As in Char, “This is a wonderful car! …oh, sorry, I meant Lexus." Bwah! I do like her. But she’ll have to do something to make me into her. Just not feeling you yet.

Emily’s making a hoodie. Kini’s doing denim. Again. Why is he doing that? Char likes a really cool window display, a yellow thing with shooting things. Etc.

So, they have two days. And we’re whizzing through this part of the challenge, so I’m predicting the second day means another surprise look.

Also, as Char seems to be impregnable, I’m predicting Emily for the boot today.

In the meantime, all the designers are talking about how much better life is without Korina, and how there’s no tension and how much of a shit she was and a bad sport, etc. because we didn’t get enough of that last week.

In the morning, when the designers show up they see that in the workroom, five of the knockout looks are arranged around the room. Tim walks in with the button bag. They are assigned a look and an assistant. Take a losing look and reposition it into a winning look. No cohesion with the first look, whatever. ...so why are we doing this second look that has absolutely nothing to do with the street chic challenge? I have no idea. Anyway, Char chooses Korina’s look. Sean gets stuck with Sandhya’s - or the “devil baby” look.

And of course in walks the losing designers, and they have to help the person who chose their looks. Korina is a “black cloud” according to Char, but Char bucks up and tries to be into having to deal with this. Korina is told she’s to assist Char. And, shocker, she is looking like she just ate a truckload of lemons with a couple quarts of vinegar chaser. Well, her elimination basically just happened, right? Nonetheless, you’d think with an hour or two, she would have realized that this is going to come across really, really badly on camera, but apparently not.

Char says, “Tim, is this going to be a problem?” and Tim says, “Talk to me.” Oh, Tim, seriously, give me a break. I don’t think this needs a “talk.” It’s pretty clear a) how both designers feel, b) the context for the problem and c) why Korina is not going to be much help Char, even if she decided to suck it up and soldier through.

Korina states she really can’t help, excuses herself and leaves.

Well, there you go.

But we can’t leave it there; now the producers interview all the designers so they can tell us how big an asshole Korina is being, cuz we really need to be told that.

Sandhya and Sean cut the tension by Sandhya saying, thanks for picking my look! And Sean saying, “Uh, it was the last one.”

In the meantime, Char gets Alexander as a sub. So it’s all for the best, anyway.

…and now we can get back to the design issues.

Tim confabs with the designers:

Emily admits she is not paying a lot of attention to the repurpose. Uh oh. That won’t be good.

Char has an art piece type skirt… with a pocket. Tim thinks it looks odd. She’s cut Korina’s cape to some obi-type middle thing. I like the vibe of her street look; I’m interested in seeing how it comes out.

Kini and Mitchell: He’s making a long sleeve onto Mitchell’s red piece. And the street, denim trench. Tim doesn’t think it’s enough, that we could go to Michael Kors and buy it. It needs more Kini style.

Sean and Sandhya: Tim thinks his street look is looking a little too “service worker” vibe with some crappy green tiny print fabric thing. His inspiration was a Middle-eastern white kaftan-like outfit you see on the streets esp. in the Muslim communities. The pink thing: The kid has grown and they’re making a fringe (oy, fringe again) jacket and a white dress. O…kay. Also, I’d like to point out that Sandhya’s wearing a peplum, and it doesn’t look so hot on her, either.

All the designers are talking about showing at fashion week and how awesome that would be. But don’t they all go, even with decoy collections, and doesn’t everyone know that?

Runway

Guest judge: Some actress.

Amanda:
Street:

Ooh, that’s very cool. The volume is a bit too much, but she did a good job blocking the panels, and you know the judges are going to really like it

Re-purpose:

That doesn’t seem very Amanda, but you can see its roots and I think she did a good job making it a lot more cool than it was originally.

Emily:

Street:

Cool - the underneath part looks like pajamas, but I like the hoodie. Don’t love the forked tongue look in the back. I kind of like the style of what’s underneath, but all one print, I dunno about that. I think if the pants had been one of the grey shades of the hoodie, it would have looked more street-ready, and less sheet-ready.

Repurposed:

Meh, okay. Kind of off-the-rack. But okay, it’s fine.

Sean: Street:

Okay. It’s very white! You can really see his inspiration in this look, so it’s captured the challenge really well - that Middle-eastern kaftan vibe is totally happening. It seems very fashionable, but not my thing. Not that that matters - I think the judges are going to love it.

Repurpose:

Fringe!!! Sigh. Pepto Bismol fringy pink. Oy. Shouldn't this color make a designer think, okay, let's calm down this vibe now. Not FRINGEWOOT!!!! Sandhya’s original look was kind of a pedophile’s dream, and this one is only marginally better? I think that fabric is cursed or something.

Char:

Well, I really like the overall idea, but the top ended up way too abbreviated and the skirt’s just too tight, esp. from the back. But I like the idea of the look, I really like the print/color combo, but not the cut, not the cut at all. It has a good graffiti/color feel, but it just lost its way somewhere on the road through execution. The panels are very whimsical - but then the pocket is just too tailored, these are very dissonant styles. And what happened to the top?!! That print is so cool - why this cheap-looking cut?

Repurp:

Basic silhouette, boring.

Kini:

At first I thought the skirt was cool, but looking at it in the picture, ugh, no. It's something about the denim and the wavy bottom? Just, no. When you put it into the whole thing, it’s all so busy and the overall look seems… sloppy? This is odd for him. And I think it's a mistake to use denim again. Same as I think it's a mistake Emily decided on her look even before she investigated the streets for the challenge.

Repurp:

I like the sleeve. The dress is very hot! I think he’s the only one I actually liked with the repurpose look. You know Heidi’s going to love that.

So, okay, in general, IMO, all of the designers didn’t really pay enough attention to their second looks, except for Kini. They’ll love Amanda’s and Sean’s street chic, and they’ll find a reason to boot Emily, although I don’t think Char’s are as strong. Different verse, same as the first.

Judging:

Kini: Heidi thinks the trench is great but the underneath is too busy. Yep. Nina agrees, less is more. Zac says he has to edit himself. Zac loves the red dress design. Heidi loves the gown, so does Nina.

Emily: Heidi thinks it’s pajama-y. Wow, she agreed with me, ha! Zac thinks the pajamas thing is cool, but Nina thinks it’s too Cirque Du Soleil under it - and likes the hoodie thing. Nina is disappointed with the do-over. It’s not Emily. Zac doesn’t think either look is runway ready. This of course, is the sound of an elimination rumbling.

Amanda: Nina loves the street look. But the repurpose is a bit bare. The guest think it’s Tron-like. Heidi loves the Bohemian chic on the street look. The re-do doesn’t say Amanda. Zac loves the street look.

Char: Nina appreciates her color use. The street look is a lot, the skirt is a bit much - the pocket is just too much. Zac doesn’t think it’s executed very well. Zac and Heidi are kind of Meh.

Sean: Heidi, “What is going on here?” She thinks it’s fantastic. She loves the skirt. She’s never seen anything like it. Cut-outs are unexpected. Nina thinks it’s one of the best pieces ever on the show. But the second look is crazy. Not cool at all. Zac thinks the street look is “delicious,” he’s “blown away.” The second look is “flamingo show princess.”

So the judges seemed to believe that Char could fix the issues if she were able to get them home, but I’m not sure why they think that, since the big problem seems to be the pocket on the skirt, and Char was absolutely insistent on that. It’s not like her insisting on the wrong idea will be fixed by giving her more time.

Anyway, whatever. The choice is, do we keep one of either Emily or Char? Sounds like they’re trying to justify keeping Char, and Emily’s out. And Sean will certainly win for the white thing.

Kini’s in.

Emily is out. She’s fine with it.

Sean and Amanda are in too.

So, just a question of Char, who is told she will be showing as well.

Of course.

So yeah, I really don’t care who wins.

Although, now that I’ve just gone and looked at Emily’s Fashion Week runway, I’m really glad we don’t have to suffer through that. Blech.

What did you all think?
