Listening to:
Marilyn Manson's Born Villain
I won't lie, after MM's incredibly disappointing albums in the past few years (Eat Me, Drink Me and The High End of Low anyone?) I was hesitant about Born Villain. However, upon hearing a promising preview a few months ago and then later reading the generally positive reviews, I decided to give it a listen. Third time's the charm, eh, right? WRONG!
I tried to like it, I really did, but I guess Manson's lost his charm ever since The Golden Age of Grotesque. The tracks had the feel of his old albums which is probably what I liked about the preview (which I believe had been the song No Reflection), however, I still expected more. I mean, No Reflection was pretty much one of the only songs worth listening to with maybe Pistol Whipped or Murderers Are Getting Prettier Every Day which were alright but nothing special. Plus a lot of it pretty much sounded all the same to me. There was no redeeming track in my opinion and the whole album seemed so sloppily and lazily put together. Manson's vocals didn't even have the same impact as they used to. It was as though something was missing but I just couldn't pinpoint what. If anything, he should just quit while he's ahead. Sure, he may be getting on in years but there are plenty of older musicians who are still just as good as they were in their prime. If anything, the gimmick's starting to grow stale. He's no longer shocking and nor is his music.
& here's an obligatory sample track:
