Since I've been feeling upset as of late (Which I do NOT want to go into) and because I've had this idea going back and forth in my head for a few days now, I figured it was time to yammer on for an essay. And this one is "How 'Your Highness' and 'Once Upon A Time' can co-exist". It's been my favorite subject for fan fiction this past year, and it just WORKS.
First, I'll get the major differences out of the way.
*Trolls. In OUAT, they're more like
orcs, yet in YH, they're a
non-threatening race in Mourne.
*Dwarves. In OUAT, they're not exactly human. In fact, they
hatch from eggs fully grown. (I am wondering if this might be from an abandoned Disney movie about the seven dwarves...) In YH, they're just like everyone else. They reside in their own kingdom where their whimsical nature irritate Thadeous (He was the only one to go on a diplomacy mission, which is recounted in the prequel comic "Dazed")...until he's caught in bed with the queen (Who just happens to be the
only non-dwarf in the village) and that sends everyone into an uproar. Then it's all
hangings and
tar and featherings. *Faeries. In YH, they're sorta humanoid,
nearly clockwork robotic looking... OUAT, I'm guessing they're
humans who become faeries. (Which explains why they've wound up as nuns in the real world, it's a position of serving your fellow man.) Unfortunately, the faeries of Mourne are in danger of being
LITERAL fairy dust. If Ruhel Gorm found out about this,
she'd have his head. *The two moons. This is a major plot point in YH, but as for Fairytale Land, they're under one. There had been mentions in the DVD commentary that Mourne was the 'northern-most continent of the "Krull" planet', but it's not official. :)
So here's where it makes perfect sense-
*Greek mythology. In OUAT,
King Midas appeared in one episode, as well as a
siren and a sneaky reference to the
Persephone and Hades story. We have not seen any inhuman creatures from these stories show up just yet in the show. YH had that covered as there was a
cyclops (Which is elaborated on in the "Knight" story of the prequel comic) and a
minotaur...which was anatomically correct. O_O And let's not forget Thadeous wanting to prove his worth by beating off in front of a Pegasus. (Uh...)
*A Polytheistic society. Both shows have had utterance to "Oh my Gods". This could easily get into the aforementioned Greek mythology as well. Jane Espenson mentioned that she thought of Fairytale Land as just that. Mere coincidence, but still...
*Mixing time periods. Both may look like they're set in the Middle Ages/Renaissance, but YH has managed to sneak in the
Georgian era and
tribal savages ala "Conan the Barbarian" while OUAT is introducing a gang of pirates next season. Of course, what good fantasy movie/TV show ISN'T shy about mixing time periods/genres?
*Familiar fairytale cliches. Crashing the wedding (Or any other important celebration) for one. Whether it's
making off with the bride or
leaving a curse on everyone to destroy their happiness. This also goes for betrayals, if it's having to
watch your back from traitors or
meeting a sudden end out of nowhere. Though in the case of OUAT, it's inevitable.
As for it officially happening, it can't for a number of reasons, but still, it's a pretty good idea for fanfiction... :)
