Today's Blog prompt says: "Share a story with your readers about one moment when you felt independent and in control"
Well this won't take long.
My first husband, after six months of not talking directly to me - If we were alone together he would ignore everything I said and if the children were there and I asked "do you want a cup of tea" he would say to one of the children "tell your mother, no". Any way he suddenly said "I suppose you'll want a birthday present."
I kept my hand steady as I poured my coffee and said "yes please, I'll have a divorce."
I watched with detached calm as he placed the back of his hand to his forehead and said "You realise you have ruined my life! I am taking the car and the tent and I'll fight you for the children."
Here was where I realised that I was in control of the situation because I didn't raise my voice and I didn't cry. I just said "Take the car, take the tent, take everything that you paid for in this house but hell will freeze over before those children leave here. You can see them every day if you wish, you can have them to stay as often as they want to go but if you fight me for them I will make sure they know exactly what kind of man you are."
He left the room packed a case and timed his exit so that as the kids came in from school he said "your mother has something to tell you, I am leaving and going to live somewhere else"
Yes it was hard but I took control of my life that day and guided us through all the stuff that followed and never once did I feel that I was wrong.
So there you go. I found my freedom that day.
