Ah ... the wonder of new discoveries

Wanted: A writer who can dish out action + adventure + humour + kick ass characters you can love.

I am always on the look out for good urban fantasy writers. After Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series made it mega big, many authors thought that they could put on their Bram Stoker hat and write paranormal. The truth is, most of them aren't fun to read. Many tries too hard to be funny that the supernatural become nothing more than comic relief. Others use supernatural elements to create uber Mary Sue characters that make you grit your teeth so bad that you throw the book against the wall at the end of it, demanding the time you wasted trying to find something redeeming in the book. I won't name names, since mileage will vary, but also thanks to this horrible authors, I became more adventurous in the authors that I will explore.

Except for Simon R Green and Jim Butcher, near all of the fantasy (both urban and swords 'n' sorcery kind) writers whom I read are women. Thus I am delighted to make the acquaintanceship of Mark Del Franco's Convergent World, starting with Skin Deep.

Laura Blackstone is a tough, gutsy and pedal-to-the-metal kinda gal. Many of us juggles more than one job at a time but I'll bet not many deal with each job with a different personality and physical appearance. As a druid of the Celtic sidhe extraction, she straddles the world of humans and fey, working damn hard to make sure the Converged Worlds that has already collided doesn't blow up in everyone's face. She's damaged, making her an interesting character to follow.

But another character deserves mention here; Jono Sinclair, a singular guy who makes you soften like putty on a hot day. His sly humour and rough and ready gallantry makes for a male character to make your heart skip a beat. The chemistry between them, although subtle, is off the charts.

I can't wait for more.

glee, in love with the written word, recs, books
