Bloody Lip

We had two "new" horses come in last night to Fox Ferret. Technically they've been at our farm before but they were sent to Maryland for a few weeks to be worked with by my boss' daughter. The horses are Boojwhacked, a gorgeous chestnut gelding that looks like the epitome of all things racehorse, and Henry, a tall and skinny, nervous gelding with a narrow face.

I was tacking up Henry in a stall and he was being his typical jittery self, trying to circle when I approached, holding his head up when I put the bridle on, and generally not standing completely still ever. He doesn't mean to be malicious though, so I talked to him and pet him and tacked him up as quietly as I could. He was ready to go when I noticed one of his reins was a little tangled up in his bridle. He was standing in the corner as I stepped in front of him and began adjusting the straps on his bridle when WHAM! he threw his head up and into my face.

I was only standing inches away from the wall, so when his teeth crashed into my lower lip, my head was thrown backwards into the concrete. I wanted to cry, it hurt so bad, but instead I lunged at Henry the instant after my head bounced off the wall and struck him once on the shoulder. He backed off and looked at me, utterly confused. I know he didn't mean to be malicious but damn, he needs to know not to throw himself around like that. I stood back within the next few seconds and tried to assess what was going on. My head was throbbing and I lifted my hand to my mouth, already tasting blood. About that time, Becky came around the corner and immediately ran away to get something for my lip which was now gushing blood.

I haven't had a busted lip before. Aside from the initial blow, it didn't hurt, but unless I kept a cloth on it, it would fill my mouth with blood every few seconds.

Ouch.
