I love a lot of things about the manga Banana Fish, and one of them is the fact that it's set in the USA. I particularly enjoy that the character of Ash, like me, is white American. I’ve commented at various times that Scorpius derives many of his attitudes from Tauza's upbringing. In fact, he gets almost every attitude from Tauza, and thus, the ideological traits that differentiate Scorpius from "the Scarrans" also differentiate Tauza from many of her fellow Scarrans. Watching/discussing Farscape has got me to thinking about the pregnancy motif in TV/film science fiction (and fantasy), a motif I find annoying because it usually reinforces a discourse in which it is “normal/natural” for women to be denied reproductive choice (and men, too, but they’re less intimately affected).
