Little victories are often the nicest. I was changing wallets. The old one was falling apart, so it was the thing to do. I found a Borders gift card I had forgotten about. I don't even remember who gave it to me, though it may well have been the Christmas gift from the Holiday Party at Bender from 2008! Since the Borders at Garden State Plaza was going to close, Julia and I went to see what we could scare up, along with our Close-Out coupons we got in our emails. Of course, that store did not have the books I wanted, so I made do with the next best thing, books I had been meaning to get eventually: The Joseph Campbell Companion, edited by Dane K. Osbon, and Campbell's Thou Art That: Transforming Religious Metaphor. Total price before various discounts: $35.99. Total in my gift card: $30! Once taxes and discounts evened out, I got those books for free. This was a very nice belated birthday surprise.
For the record, I have not forgotten my Metaphysical Reading Project. I will be starting that again next week, I hope. I recently unpacked and un-boxed two of the books on my list, so now I'll set aside a little time each week to post something about each chapter of the first book (Karen Armstrong's The Case for God), in between my job search pilgrimages.
Days are getting longer. Life will get more bearable. I will allow myself a little happiness now and then, and devil take those who may wish to have me feel guilty over that. I've gone through the Guilt phase enough on my own (and of all the phases, that one tends to re-cycle itself the most) without help from anyone else.
Try to be good to each other, all.
