When: After Lily picks up her kitten (either October 3rd or 4th).

[ Severus hadn't stuck his head out to see who had entered as there was only one other besides himself that the wards he had meticulously set up would freely let through. He was in the little kitchen getting himself a cup of tea. A flick of his wand turned it into two cups charmed to remain warm on a platter that sent floating out into the sitting room. ]

Quite unsurprisingly, yes. I was not compelled by the urge to go anywhere after you left for your own outing, which I trust went well. [ He followed after the tray, which set itself down on a table. He had been reading the whole time, his book on the armchair. ]

And here I thought me leaving would give you a chance to go gallivanting through the whole city or find a way to torment my son. [ She made her way into the sitting room to sit on the chair that wasn't occupied by his book. As she sat she shifted the kitten within her jacket to accommodate the change in her position and there was a tiny mew of protest. ]

[ He had sat back down, one cup of tea transferred to a little table by the armchair, book in hand. ] It is still early in the week. [ He stopped reading almost immediately after starting, book lowering enough for him to look at her. ]

... what was that?

Well - Severus - there was something I wanted to bring to your attention. [ Carefully she pulled the kitten from her jacket and placed it on her lap. It stretched and yawned, tongue lolling out and it hopped off her lap and started to look around the room. ]

I adopted a kitten.

[tenpointsfrom]

[ He just stared at her, eyes occasionally flicking down to the floor to watch the little furball intruder wander around. ]

You adopted ... a kitten.

That is what I said.

[tenpointsfrom]

[ His mouth thinned slightly. ] And just why did it seem like a 'good' idea?

Are you objecting to the kitten being here?

[tenpointsfrom]

[ His eyes glanced down at the furball that was tottering closer to him. Most likely because it was curious about the other close source of body heat if she had already spoiled it by carrying it back close to her body. But as he looked back at Lily he knew he was in a battle he would lose. Object to the kitten and face her wrath. Assuming he could deny Lily when those green eyes looked at him just so. Might as well agree before she pouted (he didn't put it past her to use that tactic). ]

You will take care of it and it sleeps in your room only.

[ A large smile slipped across her face. ] I knew you would see things my way. [ The shine of Severus' shoes caught the kitten's attention and it pounced on one of them. ]

[ Well at least he got a smile for his troubles ... though he was quickly distracted from it when the kitten decided to pounce on his foot. It hardly weighed anything of course but he still scowled at it. ]

Lily. Your cat. [ He shifted his foot away, which was a mistake as the kitten followed it. ]

For Merlin's sake, you're such a grumpy old man. [ Reaching out she rubbed her thumb and index finger together. It quickly grabbed the kittens attention and it came crashing towards Lily's hand. ]

[ He outright scowled at that before pointedly going back to reading. First, they had been over it before. In the magic world he had still been fairly young at his death. Second, he hardly needed any further reminders there was now an odd age gap between them. From being weeks apart to being seventeen years apart. ]

[ Gently picking the kitten up, she started to stomp off to her room. Lily was half tempted to go into his room and rub the kitten all over everything, but she wasn't about to torture the kitten like that.

Halfway out of the sitting room she turned around and walked over to him. Carefully positioning the kitten so it was looking over the book at him. It mewed again at him. ]

[ He had pretty much expected her to storm off. But he knew it would blow over eventually as a kitten hardly compared in the end to other things they had disagreed on before.

What he hadn't expected was to see a little furry face mewing at him from the top of his book. He shifted the book to one hand so he could hold out a few fingers for it to sniff at. ]

[ That made her smile. A loud purr came from the kitten as it sniffed then licked at Severus' fingers. ] See, it isn't so bad.
