What: Rukia asked Byakuya to help her train in order to achieve Bankai. He accepted.
Where: Training compound at the Kuchiki Manor

Sleep had been mostly elusive for Byakuya the night before. He had tried telling himself that this was just going to be some training, nothing dangerous, and that there was nothing for him to worry about. Of course, this was Rukia, the one person he had to watch over, the one person he had to protect above all else. Actively raising his blade against her contradicted everything he was supposed to do, didn't it?
Then again, it wasn't like he hadn't put her in harm's way before, even if it wasn't his blade that threatened her life then.
However, when he thought about it even more (always a risky thing to do with the mind of a solitary man), helping her become stronger would give her the chance to be able to defend herself better. And if she were stronger, it could ease his mind in return, knowing that he had done what he was supposed to, albeit in a more roundabout way. She had proven herself worthy of the title of Shinigami more than once and Byakuya knew that, even if he never said a word. This was the logical progression of things.
She had reached Bankai once before, she could do it again.
As he readied himself for the day (having woken up earlier than usual and immediately making some strong tea), he automatically reached for his kenseikan...but then stopped. It would only be him and Rukia today. Overpowering her with the symbols of his status wouldn't accomplish anything positive. She had to come to her brother for this task, not the Head of the family or the Captain of the Sixth. So Byakuya pulled his hand away and simply tied his hair back instead. He also forsook his haori and scarf, wearing only his shihakushou, with Senbonzakura at his hip, of course.
And he waited for Rukia, hoping he could do the right thing for her.
