THE ROAD

[ Though not all buildings have been decorated, some have, pumpkin motifs and reminders of the spirits that are said to walk Promenade sitting on windowsills and porches. At night, trick-or-treaters are common, ringing on door bells before scampering away with their prizes. ]

[Giles has mercifully managed to escape a costume. He'll be wandering up and down the Road for a few hours, sampling what there is to sample and talking to anyone who looks in a mood to talk.

He's not terribly fond of the reminders of the presence of spirits, occasionally giving the decorations an obvious side eye. He tries to focus much more on the turning to his favorite season and much less on what it means to this place. Tries to remember Halloween back home, a day that should have been a day of quiet and peace and almost never was.

When the sun starts to set, he pulls a folding lantern from his bag, lights it, and heads over to the beach for ghost stories.]

[Nepeta's easily excitable at the best of times; during festivals she's barely stoppable.

And of course, if sugary treats have been involved, that only makes it worse.

This all means that she runs into Giles before she stops to think anyone might be in front of her. Thus he is faced with an apologietic kittytroll dressed as a cat]

[He stumbles at the impact before looking around in surprise for whoever was the cause of it.

[As it dawns on her who she's walked into, a grin spreads across her face]

That's good. Things have been pretty scary lately but I'm glad we can still have things like this to make up for it.

I've been okay, though. And I'm having a lot of fun here.

[It's the first time he's ever really been out on guard duty, and he supposes if he had to pick a way to pop his cherry, this might as well be it. He watches the children scampering around idly smiling at their enjoyment, a very friendly looking Rottweiler seated beside him on a leash.]

[Mysari herself is noticing how crowded the street is during the holiday, thankful it's for a festive reason, and not something terrible. The sight of another guard nearby causes her to pause, but grin slightly underneath the full mask she wears. She has no horns, no tail, and no ears that give away who she is- that was all a part of the agreement when she signed to join the royal guard.

Still, amongst others she's content, and it shows.]

[He looks up at her curiously. Unlike many who have joined the guard, he did not fear anyone recognizing him. The distinctive piercing green of his eyes and the dog at his side made him pretty obvious to anyone who knew him.

He gives a sideways smile, friendly and easy if a little bit nervous about his first day out.]

A party indeed. It's welcoming, at least.

[She nods at him, curious about the dog, but not mentioning much about it at this point.]

[His lips purse, glancing away for a moment, eyes following a gaggle of laughing children.]

It's better that way. Maybe everyone'll feel a little better when it's done and everyone can stop stabbing each other in the ribs, or something.

[He was attached to this place. Even after getting his heart broken with Naoto leaving, it hadn't made him resentful. It just made him want to honor and be a part of the city that had given him the chance to meet her. He wants this place happy, and safe.]

I really hope the stabbing isn't something that's common. It's upsetting. I'd rather have days be like this.

[She does, too. It's given her a chance to understand why she was chosen to be queen. and to live her life to see how she needs to return that way.]

[Effy knows that stance. She knows Bowen, even if she hasn't seen him in a while. She'd greet him with a hug, but she doesn't know how he'll react. Instead she'll go with a simple,]

[The rottweiler wags its tail excitedly at her approach, and is certainly more immediately friendly than Bowen himself who frowns half-heartedly.]
