I don't even know how to describe the weekend conference. Amazing-wonderful-extraordinary-stupendous... the list of adjectives go on and on! I got to hang out with my incredible editor Liz all weekend! We did a presentation together Sunday morning that was a blast. I think we totally dispelled the myth that the author/editor relationship is adversarial and that editors are scary, mean creatures from another planet. It should be a warm, friendly, fun relationship and I think that really came through loud and clear! All 3 editors were great -- very approachable, friendly and helpful.
My writing buddy Jill and I did a 2-hour breakout session where we listened to pb pitches and then gave our opinion and brainstormed ideas. It's so fun to see how writers can jump in and help others see their idea from a different perspective. It's a bit intimidating to respond to an idea off the top of your head but it was fun and I hope, helpful.
Now for the surreal part of the conference. I watched the Red Sox game in Jane Yolen's hospitality room. And she had us do the "wave." A lot. And we shared a bag of trail mix. Wow. Does life get any better than that? Yeah, hanging with my homies -- NY editors, Jane Yolen, Adam Stemple... How can I NOT be a Red Sox fan after that?
I also met 2 extremely warm and fun attendees from WI. A big shout out to Kathleen and Pam B! Can't wait to go to one of your conferences and take part in the famous "snack table" ritual or have you come back to one of ours. Or both!
Jane's presentation of revising was wonderful -- I took copious notes and nodded so much I looked like a bobble-head.
All in all, the best conference ever! At least until the next one...
