Yesterday I did a reading at B&N and had a nice group of kids. We talked about the 4th of July first and then I asked about other holidays. They answered with the usual, Easter, Halloween, July 17th... Huh? One little girl was pretty sure that was a holiday but she didn't know which one. The regular storytime woman was there and after I read she had them draw flags, march like soldiers and eat cookies. She asked them what soldiers do and they said "Keep everyone safe, and "help people." That same little girl said "and rescue kitties from trees." The boy next to her poked her, rolled his eyes and said, "that's the FIREMEN!" They were so cute! Another little girl came complete with questions written out for me. She wants to be a writer and I loved talking to her. She and her mother left but a few minutes later came back. She'd thought of 1 more question when she was walking out -- "Do you get PAID to write books?" When I said yes, writing can be a real job that you get paid for, she was thrilled! her mother said she'd never even thought of it that way and that's why she brought her back in to talk to me again. We both decided we'd write even if we didn't get paid but that's a very nice bonus! I've had a lot of fun doing readings and signings but I have a break from them for awhile so I can get back to writing. Cleaning and de-cluttering my room has helped. Now I can find things so much easier and it just helps to have everything organized and tidy. I just don't know how long I can keep it this way! I was born without a "tidy" gene... sad, but true.
