I really question if sanity is optional some times

Were you to ask the regular Joe Bloggs, if one were to break one's neck in the course of an activity it would usually be a good reason to stop doing it. If one were to break one's neck a second time doing that same activity it would certainly be time to stop doing it. Especially if one of those incidents caused the fracturing of five of the seven cervical vertebra.

Not for the BMX riders I was treating on Sunday. He took a ramp slightly wrong and ended up doing a face-plant from about 2m up, cracking his helmet in the process. My partner and I didn't take any chances. Collar, scoop stretcher and ambulance off to hospital for x-rays. We saw a video of the impact and that clinched it for us.

He was the 4th patient of the day, we got three patients all at once when during the practice runs the hydralic gate didn't drop properly and tipped eight riders over their handlebars. Our three patients had all aggravated old injuries in either the wrist, elbow or shoulder. We were pretty sure the wrist was a fracture and the guy had screws and plates in it already.

Also got to meet an Olympian, Sarah Walker from the BMX team. She wasn't riding to spare her recently reconstructed shoulder but was there to support someone else. She's lovely, very personable and friendly and came over to have a nosey at the patients after we'd done our bit.

In other news, there was a rescue of a different sort when I got home today. I went to my room to dump my things and heard Kitty making noise outside. I thought she wanted in so I went to have a look out the window. I saw her indulging in that unpleasant feline habit of playing with prey. Cue a dash out the door past Mum- 'What's your emergency?' 'Kitty!'- to rescue a very frightened wax eye. I think I got to it before anything too bad happened and found a nice spot for it to recover.

people are stupid, life, st john
