Summary: when kibum was 4,
When Kibum was 4, Jinki was 6.
“Hyung,” Kibum poked the slightly taller boy as he held up his drawing, “this is me,” - Kibum said proudly, pointing at the shorter mess of lines, “and that other one is you.”
“Oh Kibummie!” Jinki cried happily, “this looks wonderful.” (And little Jinki wasn’t lying, not one bit.)
Mrs Lee smiled at the two boys from the kitchen. “Time for tea, boys,” she called.
Laughing all the way, the two friends ran to the dining table, hands linked. Watching the two boys chatting happily as they waited for the milk and cookies, Mrs Lee couldn’t help but hope that time could stop, because she knew that Kibum would grow up one day, and she was afraid of how Jinki would take that.
“Thanks mummy,” Jinki smiled happily, revealing the hole where his two front teeth were supposed to be.
“Thanks mummy,” Kibum echoed, giggling.
Mrs Lee smiled softly, and ruffled both their hair. “Come on boys,” she nudged, “eat up. It’s your naptime after this.”
When Kibum was 6, Jinki was 6.
“Hyung!” Kibum cried as he ran to hug Jinki, “I learnt multiples of four today!”
Jinki frowned, “I don’t know the multiples of four.”
“It’s okay,” Kibum smiled as he pulled Jinki back to his house, “I’ll teach you.”
Kibum spent the rest of the afternoon over at Jinki’s house, teaching the older boy the multiples of four. “Hyung, twelve is the third multiple of four, not thirteen! Silly Jinki,” Kibum teased, pulling the older boy’s cheek playfully.
Jinki said nothing, smiling and tilting his head cutely. “So, the third multiple is twelve. Okay, I got it.”
When Kibum’s mother finally came to take him home, Jinki slumped over his desk, dejected. Seeing this, Mrs Lee came over. “Mummy,” Jinki sobbed, “why can’t I - Why can’t I…”
“I’m so stupid!” he finally burst.
Mrs Lee sighed and hugged her only son. “You’re not stupid Jinki; you’re special.”
When Kibum was 8, Jinki was 6.
Kibum and Jinki had grown considerably since they had first become friends four years ago; they could no longer both fit into the small space in Jinki’s cupboard. Jinki was frantic, looking for another spot they could use, but Kibum tapped him on the shoulder.
“Jinki,” he called, looking down at his feet.
Looking at how helpless Kibum looked, Jinki started to panic a little. “Kibummie, what’s wrong?”
“Jinki,” Kibum called again, “you’re different. You’re different from the other kids at school, from my other friends, from me.”
Young Jinki shook his head, “But my mummy says I’m just special.”
“Hyung, listen to me,” Kibum looked like he was close to tears, “I have other friends now.”
“So? I don’t mind sharing you. My mummy tells me I always have to share.”
“Jinki I don’t want to be your friend anymore!”
Jinki froze, tears welling up in his big doe eyes. “But Kibum… you’re my only friend.”
“I’m sorry,” Kibum said before running off.
(Jinki cried for days after that, but exactly one week later, Kibum appeared in his room in tears, telling Jinki that he had missed him. Needless to say, Jinki forgave him immediately.)
When Kibum was 14, Jinki was 6.
Kibum had finally caught up to Jinki’s height, and the two of them towered above both their mothers. And yet, Kibum knew that hidden inside Jinki’s tall, lanky sixteen-year-old body, was a young boy who was no older than six.
“Jinki,” he called the older boy shyly, “I think I love you.”
Jinki blinked, before grinning widely. “Kibummie, you’re the silly one now. We’re best friends!”
Kibum sighed a little, but he smiled for Jinki anyway, “Yes, Jinki, we’re best friends. Forever.”
Kibum didn’t know what he had been hoping for, but maybe a part of him wished that despite the older boy having the mental capacity of a six-year-old, he might have loved Kibum back. But deep down, Kibum knew that Jinki would never be able to love him back the way Kibum loved him.
When Kibum was 18,
“Hey Kibum,” Jinwoon said over the phone, “we’re heading down to the club tonight, are you coming?”
Kibum paused, contemplating whether he should tell Jinwoon that he already had prior plans, but knowing the other boy, he wouldn’t rest till he knew what Kibum had planned to do, and once he knew, Kibum would never hear the end to the teasing.
“Yeah, I’m coming.”
But at the club, even though Kibum usually had no qualms against dancing the night away, that night, he sat alone at the counter.
“Aren’t you going to dance tonight, Key?” The bartender, Jonghyun, asked.
Kibum slowly shook his head. “… What time is it?”
Jonghyun checked his watch, “it’s about ten fourty-five, why?”
“Nothing,” Kibum murmured.
One hour and fifteen minutes until the end of December 14th. If I leave now, I can still make it.
“Hey Jjong,” Kibum called, “tell Jinwoon and the rest that I left.”
And once he received a nod from the young bartender, Kibum ran off. He had always spent Jinki’s birthday with him, and he wasn’t planning on breaking the tradition now.
By the time he arrived at Jinki’s front door, it was already past eleven-thirty - way past Jinki’s usual bedtime. He knocked softly on the door, and it was opened almost immediately by Mrs Lee.
“Is Jinki still awake?” Kibum asked, fearful that the answer would be ‘no’. He couldn’t bear the thought of Jinki crying himself to sleep because he hadn’t shown up to celebrate his birthday with him.
Mrs Lee smiled softly and opened the front door all the way, revealing a half-asleep Jinki who sat at the dining table.
“He insisted to stay up,” Mrs Lee said, “he refused to believe that you weren’t coming.”
“Jinki?” Kibum called as he stepped into the house.
Jinki’s head snapped in the direction of the door immediately, a grin breaking out on his face. “See mummy, I told you Kibummie would come!”
Mrs Lee laughed at her son’s behaviour, “yes, and you were right, Jinki.”
“Sorry Jinki,” Kibum apologized, “I would have come earlier, but I was buying your cake.” Kibum held up the cake he bought on the way back.
“Cake!” Jinki laughed happily as he took the box from Kibum, bringing it to the table.
“I’m glad you came, Kibum,” Mrs Lee said softly.
Kibum sniffed a little, blinking rapidly to try and get rid of the tears that were collecting in his eyes. “I nearly didn’t want to come. I’m such a bad friend to Jinki; I’m sorry.”
Mrs Lee patted Kibum’s back, “it’s okay, Kibum. As long as you’re here now, nothing else matters.”
“Kibummie?” Jinki’s voice interrupted, “are you crying?”
Kibum quickly wiped away his tears. “No, I’m fine, really.”
Frowning, Jinki walked over to where Kibum stood, “you don’t have to hide it from me.”
Seeing Jinki’s unhappy expression, Kibum put on his brightest smile. “It’s your birthday. You’re supposed to be happy, silly Jinki.”
Seeing that Kibum was happy again, Jinki laughed. And then, he whispered something into Kibum’s ear.
… Jinki finally told him that he loved him.
