"Your Hero, Ever and Always"

I missed Jonathan Richmond's birthday party on Sunday because it conflicted with Mystery Hunt. Which is unfortunate. But what's far more unfortunate is that those who did manage to show up found the party unexpectedly cancelled because the host and would-be celebrant had died a few days prior. The sort of wildly inconvenient scheduling for which he would surely make a compliant to The Management, given the chance.

(With some apology for the gallows humor in this post.)

So, incredibly sad news, and a serious shock. Jonathan was about my parents' age, quite a ways from the age where sudden mortality might be expected. He was a world traveler, transit planner, corruption fighter, and fierce proponent of meritocracy. In recent years, he ran a nonprofit focused on mentoring bright but impoverished high school students from his town of Lowell, MA, with an aim to getting them into elite universities. He had an active "fanclub" newsletter where he detailed his life and travels, going back many years. (I have emails from that going back to 2004, but I think it started way before that.) He knew my dad from his MIT days, so he's been a family friend for my entire life.
