Okay, so I'm really picky about where I donate money. For instance, if I see a Salavation Army collection I'll usually give whatever I have in my wallet, whereas I'd rather unrinate in one for the Red Cross. I like to know that my money is going to an organization that is doing good things for people and that a bunch of pencil pushers aren't skimming off the top to pay insane salaries for greedy execs (or, in the case of the Red Cross, for a new multi-million dollar headquarters from 9/11 donations). So I finally found a charity that not only puts the money where it should go, but gives the donor a choice. See, there's a website called donorchoose.com that lets teachers put projects up that their school system won't/can't fund, so they ask for donations to fund these projects. You can browse a ton of projects and pick one that you like. It's really neat. Go check it out.
