When we left on this trip, I had one tiny bookcase of books. I gave away about half of my library before we left New York, and talked various friends into storing the rest for me. We couldn't really spare the space, but the thought of living for six months or a year without books was intolerable. We found space for our tiniest bookcase, and I packed it as tightly as I could with the 30-odd books I'd decided to bring with me.

Ten months later, my library has tripled in size. The bookcase is still packed, and there are stacks of books under my workbench, on the dog's crate, next to the bed, out in the truck, in front of the bookcase. I've been frugal in my acquisitions, kept to ebooks as much as possible, and yet they still accumulate, a few here, a few there, from used bookstores and thrift stores and friends around the country. Last night two more came home with me.

By the end of this trip, we'll likely have four times as many books as when we set out, and even that seems like far too few.

great american roadtrip, book!
