Drought

NC (and much of the Eastern US, I'm told) is suffering from a drought. As a practical implication of this, my water bill, which is normally about $5, was like $25 this past month. As a result, I'm doubly encouraged to save water. To this end, I took a "submarine shower" this morning. I got the idea from Tom Clancy's first book, "The Hunt for ( Read more... )

in vietnam (and elsewhere), we'd fill a large paint bucket full of water, then use a large ladle (think small sauce pot) to wet ourselves, then soap separately, then use the water to rinse. you use a lot less water.

(this was on a daily basis, and if we wanted hot water, we'd have to boil some and mix it in the bucket.)

It's sad how extreme that sounds to my American sensibilities. Thanks for opening my eyes a little bit more to how great I have it here. :-/

I did the same thing when I was in Nicaragua. Still, after a hard day of working in the fields under the hot sun, they were of the best (and most needed) showers of my life.

You could also just turn the water pressure down on your shower while making sure to turn it off in between 'tasks'. I've gotten used to a really low pressure shower in my crazy old Japanese apartment. I wouldn't take water management cues from the Japanese however but that's a separate thing...

Actually, unfortunately, I don't have that option. My shower knob only twists, and the only thing I can control is the temperature, not the pressure. But that would be a good idea, otherwise. :-)

I am looking forward to reading your new post. I won't get to it 'til Sunday, probably (long story), but I am looking forward to it, and I'm glad you finally updated your blog! :-)
