Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher [50/365 Challenge]

May 02, 2011 23:34

In this book, Clay Jensen receives a shoebox filled with seven audio tapes. On the tapes is the voice of Hannah Baker, a girl he knew that had recently committed suicide. Hannah says that those who received these tapes have played a role in her suicide. One of the thirteen reasons why she killed herself.

So much for getting away from heavy subject matter, huh?

I really enjoyed this book and thought that plot was interesting and well executed. It does a fairly good job of showing what kind of damage words can do to a person. High school rumors that seem harmless at the time are really anything but. The girl says herself that there are more reasons why that she does not address on the tapes and I wish those reasons were talked about. Some of the things this girl experienced was terrible but I don’t see leading up to a suicide. But who am I to say what is good enough reason to kill yourself? I don’t think anyone can. Everyone reacts differently and some events can affect one person more than it does another.

In no way does the book condone suicide. It just shows that something as small as a rumor can “snowball” into something really detrimental.

When I was looking for the cover, I found out this is being made into a movie. No surprise there. So far the only person cast is Hannah and it's Selena Gomez who is playing her. A Disney girl that I like. Sweet.
