I have been out of the loop for far, far too long.
I haven't really been paying much attention to the metal circuit for a while - it's difficult for me to get to a store that carries the sort of music I actually like, and I miss being able to chat music and listen to stuff at Rob's shop. As it, I've been experimenting, picking up new albums here and there pretty much on a whim, across a far broader variety of genres than five years ago. This is, of course, both a good and a bad thing; I don't think I would have enjoyed some of it a decade ago, but I know I do so now.
But at the end of the day, it's heavy metal that echoes in my mind, leaves a resonance in my heart and sets the tingly bits of my brain on fire.
I just downloaded the new Adagio album, and it's like auditory napalm.
I had a few older Adagio albums - I've always enjoyed them, because they had that neat mixture between thrashy old metal and highly precise classical music, with an affection for the harpsichord.
Well, they have a new vocalist, and they've taken a turn to the darker. Instead of thrash, I'm finding speed/power metal just this side of black metal, and they've included some growler vocals, which is fine by me. There's an energy here that I've needed, something that'll reach down and grab my spine and give it a shake.
It's not for everyone, but if anyone's interested in giving it a listen, let me know. I'll pass it along.
Meanwhile, I'm gonna go thrash around the house for a while with my headphones.
