H. H. Holmes? Yes! One of the most terrible serial killers in history, though he tends to get forgetten about and overlooked in favor of more recent ones like Bundy or Dahmer.

And they actually seem to have gotten things right. His 'murder castle' was real and just as they described it, and both the date and location of his execution was correct. Interesting tidbit, Holmes was indeed hung, and reportedly it was not a clean hanging and he took about 15 minutes to die. The deal with Holmes' grave being filled with concrete is true, and also there's no marker at the spot--I think the cemetery registry still lists the location though. The setup at the end of the episode was pretty neat, since many of the rooms in Holmes' house were outfitted with peepholes so he could watch the reactions of his victims. He did gas many of them, though sometimes he would also burn them or stretch them on a rack (which he called an 'elasticity determinator').

There were a lot of deaths after Holmes' execution, of witnesses and officials related to the case (like coroners and the prison superintendent) and also a fire that destroyed a lot of records relating to the crime, which led to much speculation about a 'curse' of Holmes.

Though I think they stated that he was the first American serial killer, and they're actually incorrect about that. IIRC the first recorded ones were the Harp(e) cousins in the 1700s. A pretty simple mistake though, since Holmes is often named as the first in some documentaries and books.

I'm not quite sure what was up with him being all grody. Is it just that he's an evil ghost so he's all nasty? Because Holmes (like many serial killers) was perfectly normal seeming, and I don't think even in prison he was in that bad of a condition. Perhaps it's some sort of externalization of Holmes' spiritual 'filthiness' which I guess works. But personally I think the regular dapper gentleman that nonetheless is really a monster is rather more terrifying, so I kind of wish that he had looked just like he did in life.

Also, I still like Ellen more than Jo. I'd say Dean should hit on her except the poor boy's terrified of her (not that I blame him).

No time to watch SV at the moment, I'll have to come back to it tomorrow.
