I win! I got my very own intern at work. Well, she's technically the lab's intern, but I'm teaching her all about my project and she's supposed to follow me around and learn things. It's great timing, in a way: I was just feeling a bit slow and stupid in the lab, and teaching Taryn shows me what I do know. She has commented on a few procedures so far, about how they're harder than they look and how she couldn't get them quite right or remember how they worked. I guess I do know things.

Taryn's all right, too. She's a quick study, a rising senior at Smith College who grew up in Troutdale, Oregon. She's been a lab technician since she got there, and has moved up to doing research this past year in a mouse lab. She plays catcher on the Smith softball team and rides (rode?) horses when she has the time. Her last summer job was in a barn or something. She looks a little like Boots, actually, though she's a bit bigger, both height- and muscle-wise. There's that equestrian thing, too; good thing it's not Taryn's main focus.

Speaking of Boots, I think she and Flash and I are about done, though Flash doesn't seem to think so. Boots said she wasn't sure anymore, and besides, the far-flung locations are about to collapse. The two of them will be living together starting in July, both attending Case Western for the next few years. If I make it in off their waitlist (unlikely, but still possible), we'll have taken over their med school (me), law school (Flash), and grad school (Boots, Ph.D. psychology). My new postdoc coworker just came from Case, actually, and he seems pleased that I'm hoping so hard to get in. Not because they're there, of course. Sadly, friends & family were almost last on my list of reasons to apply to specific schools.

I need to spend this time (lunch) editing my personal statement and activities list, since they should have been done about a month ago, fixed up as per my advisers' recommendations, and sent to AMCAS by 5 Jun, so I'll make this brief and listy.

Good:
  • Getting called "Dr. M----" by the people at the Fungal Genetic Stock Center every time they send me things. Love this "postdoc" position.
  • Like I said, I have an intern! I might get a high school kid soon, too.
  • My PI wrote me that recommendation letter. It's officially okay to call him out when he's being a douche. And I don't use that word lightly. Or almost ever, really.
  • I'm on his good side right now anyway, since I'm getting great work done and he finally noticed my work hours (8am-6:30pm on Monday, for example). Perhaps this means I'll get to leave early on my birthday.
  • I finished making a construct and plasmid for the Deutsch lab at University of Pennsylvania. Carol needs this tricky construct for a grant renewal application that's due in a couple of weeks. She apparently asked my PI for it a year ago, and he assigned it to a doctoral student about a month before she finished her thesis and left for UCSF. Needless to say, she didn't get a chance to do it. So in April, he asked me. I did it within two months while working on two other projects. Because I am a rockstar. I will say more about this project later, since I'm supposed to be keeping this short.

Less good:
  • That high school kid might be a problem. I hope he's coordinated.
  • Having an intern means I probably don't get to work on my personal stuff at work as much, if at all. Unless, of course, I can train her to do my work for me. Hmm.
  • If I don't get as much free time, it's going to take me longer to finish my med school app for 2008. Every day that goes by without my turning it in reduces my chances of getting accepted, basically. I need to edit my essays, etc., ASAP so that I can send them to the advisers, edit them twelve more times, and send my app to AMCAS for verification. It only takes a week if you get it in early, but it can take two months if you wait too long and everyone else's piles up. I'd really like it sent to schools by August, so I will try to turn it in before July. Ready, set, edit!
