I've got to give a report to the lab on the work I've been doing for the past six months. We usually get to use PowerPoint presentations for this sort of thing, but not this time. My PI says it's cheating, and I see her point. You don't need notecards (lovely, lovely notecards) because you can just glance at the screen. If you forget something, you can click right back. You don't need to memorize what all your gels and graphs look like because hey, look, they're right there about 500% larger than before. So, no PowerPoint. We're doing chalk talks to prepare for the defense of our theses come spring. On the plus side, drawing everything out means that nobody knows that you smudged your blot membrane, let your gel run too long, or didn't quite get a graph that pretty, with those tiny error bars you don't actually have to draw. I think it will be good for me, though I've gotten a lot better at public speaking over the last few years. I attribute this directly to doing queer educational outreach in the form of dorm raps for first-years ummm, something not queer-related, since I'm not talking about that in this entry. Presentations in class. That's it. At any rate, I'm glad to have to prepare for my defense. I just wish it wasn't first thing in the morning the day after an exam I need to do well on. Oh. I should be studying. Or sleeping.
I was going to type out what I've been up to in lab as practice, to make sure I don't forget anything when I'm talking about it. Maybe tomorrow. Instead, courses for spring semester: Biochemistry, Developmental Biology, and Mechanisms of Cell Function. Also writing my thesis and perhaps a publishable paper (!!); also maybe auditing something. I should take a gym class just because it would be good for me. I have begun going to the gym again, though. Starting yesterday. I need to add about ten pounds of muscle before I consider myself beasty again. As beasty as I'll get with this frame, that is.
Strict regimen for the week: Monday night PBR, Tuesday night putting on a performance, Wednesday night at the Mad Raven after working late, Thursday night clubbing, Friday night Trisk party at my place, Saturday night rugby party at my place, Sunday reading all day into night. Class, meetings, office hours, lab time, or GYM all day otherwise. Good so far.
