Dr. Reinharz & cohorts.

I met with the University President today regarding the nondiscrimination policy. It currently states that "it is essential that Brandeis be free from discrimination and harassment on the basis of race, color, ancestry, religious creed, gender, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, heterosexual), age, genetic information, disability, Vietnam Era veteran, qualified special, disabled veteran or other eligible veteran status or any other category protected by law." When I said that this was very good, but not quite perfect, Dr. Reinharz cut off the beginning of my argument for change with "We want to be perfect. How?"

Wow. Easier done than said, apparently. I sent him a bunch of info about identities and terminology, so that should get fixed up soon enough. As soon as I get through tomorrow's microbiology midterm, I need to chat with the University VP about restroom designation to double check on what one of the Deans told me. Almost everything is on schedule, and we keep adding projects.

I suggested to one of my favorite professors that he add a couple of projects to his Queer Studies (recently changed from Gay and Lesbian Studies) course, and he seemed delighted. We wanted to put together an exhibition of queer history and activism, complete with a section on Brandeis, but we ran out of time and gallery space for the fall semester. Why not do it as part of a spring course? I also suggested that we add the queer info website that we've been talking about making for a while to the syllabus. The gender performance course I took with him had an internet component that I particularly liked, and it would be great if we got the content for those pages put together. Also, I'd like academic credit for all the work I do on queer issues (though I'll likely be auditing the course, if I take it, due to the amount of biology work I have to do). What, experiential learning? Superb.

Still working slowly on adding a gender nonspecific housing option, getting an administrative advisor for queer Brandeisians, adding a gender/sexuality major/minor, implementing ally/safe space/community advisor/orientation trainings, and updating admissions/health/other forms all over campus. Woo.
