In episode 7 of Prelude of Lotus Lantern, Yang Jian comes across a dog who's just been abandoned by his owners and is about to get eaten by some street fellow. Although Yang Jian can't afford to keep the dog (since he's on the run and can get arrested and killed at any moment), he doesn't want to leave the dog there either, which makes him very distraught. Which is nice because Vincent Jiao is hot when he's distraught.
Also, the dog is cute.
Look at that tender look Yang Jian's giving him. ♥
Anyway, this dog is obviously Xiaotian Quan, Erlang Shen's dog-like follower from Lotus Lantern '05. I had actually forgotten all about him until I saw the cute doggy, and then I got really excited, because hey, my knowledge of Chinese mythology is pretty bad, so it's not every day I recognize a character. Also, I did wonder why Xiaotian Quan was so blindly devoted to Erlang Shen. Kind of like Chewbacca and Han Solo. :D
I guess in a way, Prelude works like the Star Wars prequels -- the appeal is seeing how your favorite characters turned out the way they did. But unless done well, the "foreshadowing" in the prequel can get a bit heavy-handed. Luckily, I don't remember much of Lotus Lantern, apart from Erlang Shen, so even if the foreshadowing is obvious, I probably won't notice.
In Da Jin Wu news, I just realized in ep4 that the reason everything goes all shimmery around him is because he's the Sun God. I guess that explains the red hair. It's kind of hilarious because, since he's the Sun God, he emits a ton of heat wherever he goes, so it's easy to tell when he's coming. Also, it's easy to singe yourself if you walk into him, lol.
Another running joke about Da Jin Wu is that he can't count -- because in ep3, a gang of eight demons tried attacking Yang Jian and Yang Chan. Yang Jian somehow activated his third eye (a gift from his mother), and killed six of the demons. The other two demons faked death, and so got away. Yu Ding (some guy, not sure what his role is, but he keeps popping up) saw Yang Jian take down eight demons. When Da Jin Wu arrived on the scene, the two live ones had already escaped, so he only saw six left. When he interrogated Yu Ding (they cross paths a lot, for some reason), he says there were only six, but Yu Ding insists there were eight, and so tells everyone he meets that the Jade Emperor's eldest son doesn't know how to count. xD
Normally, I'd get a little bored with this joke, but Da Jin Wu is so adorably flustered when one of his younger brothers (also with red hair) tells him the news. lol.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure Da Jin Wu is not going to be the main villain of this, since he's kind of hard to take seriously. All the better for me, since it's always a pity to crush on villains in these sort of dramas, because they inevitably die at the end. With that said, though, Da Jin Wu still might die, so I'm soaking in his scenes as much as I can.
