We have "InterSex Fish" in the Potomac River

Sep 15, 2006 12:38

It was reported last week by the the US Geological Survey that the Potomac and some of its tributaries have a smallmouth and largemouth bass species in which the males are exhibiting female characteristics. The males are producing immature eggs in their testes.

My first thought was MPREG IN NATURE! But then I had to sober up.

The cause is likely pollution but the exactly cause is unknown. Estrogen from birth control pills in human waste has even been cited as a possible cause. (Wouldn't that just make the ultra-conservative right oh so happy.)

As to the impact on drinking water and human males, studies continue.
