But wasn't this inevitable? The guy was 80 years old and had cancer. His chances of surviving Bush's presidential term were pretty slim. Maybe it's better happening now when everyone is scrutinizing the Bush administration so harshly. Bush might be more constrained in who he can pick as a replacement. I really don't know much about this. I'm just supposing.
At any rate Bush can't possibly pick anyone with a worse political agenda than the late chief from what I'm hearing on CNN. The guy seems to have been against the rights of anyone who wasn't white, male and heterosexual. Seems to me that his death probably either does nothing to the status quo or improves it if Bush is forced to pick someone less conservative.
Rehnquist was a uber-conservative, but he was on his way out. Bush has the opportunity to nominate someone who could possibly serve for as long as 25 years. That's a long time to have someone with Bush's agenda on the court. Now with 2 vacancies to fill and the Senate in the hands of the GOP?
OK, that is bad. Thanks for clarifying. I'm still holding out some hope that the timing might actually be good given how unhappy people are with the Bush administration right now.

I just don't think that Bush cares one whit anything but his own personal agenda. (Or what Karl Rove is telling him to care about.)
