The blast sent the man hurtling into the air. He awoke to intense green eyes examining him closely. For a moment Lex Luthor let himself imagine that he'd been rescued from this dismal battlefield by a handsome prince that had come to carry him away. Instead, he lay on some sort of red cloak beneath a rock overhang being treated by a Kryptonian soldier in the shelter of the cliffs.
Lex jerked away from the kneeling alien soldier's hands. He cursed his luck at being captured by Kryptonian forces.
"Easy, Captain. That mortar blast almost killed you. I've done my best to heal your wounds." The boy showed Lex a device that looked something like a flashlight. When the rays passed over Lex's skin he could feel the tissues repairing themselves.
"Better to have been killed than enslaved," Lex said sullenly.
The young man nodded in agreement. "You are not my slave and I could not let you die."
There was something different, yet frighteningly familiar, about this attractive, young Kryptonian.
"Who are you?" Lex asked.
The young man raised his head proudly. "My name is Kal-El."
Lex stared at his savior. "You are the leader of the soldiers who seek to rule my world?"
Kal-El snort and shook his head. "Regent General Zod leads the soldiers. I am only their prince," He said derisively. "I was not much more than a child when we arrived as refugees from our dead world. Your leaders launched weapons against us. We were called demons by some, invaders by others. Zod did not take the attacks well. He retaliated and this useless war has gone on for nearly twelve years. He has not once sought reconciliation."
"Is there nothing you can do to stop the fighting?" Lex asked curiously.
"I only reached majority last month. Until then I had no power at all. My people gained extraordinary powers when they set foot on this world. Only the kryptonite which is all that is left of our home world is a threat to us and your people haven't learned to use it efficiently. I have been searching for some way to force my people to live in harmony with yours. If I am to stop this war, I must seek extraordinary means."
"Perhaps we can help one another, Kal. I'm Lex." Lex offered his hand in friendship.
Kal-El smiled and grasped Lex's forearm in a more primitive version of a handshake. He examined Lex appraisingly.
"Perhaps we can."
Kal-El helped Lex to his feet and shook the dirt from his cloak. He fastened it to the shoulders of his uniform.
"That cloak marks you as a target."
Kal-El's eyes narrowed. "All of the members of the Royal Household wear red cloaks."
"Does Zod?" Lex sounded skeptical.
"He wears the colors of his regiment in battle."
"Traditional green and black, I'll bet."
"Yes."
"Very non-descript and safe during a seige. I don't trust this Zod. He sounds too much like my father -- willing to sacrifice an heir to further his own political ambitions. Ditch the cape, Kal. You'll be safer." Lex snapped his fingers. "I know where we can go. "
"Where is that?"
"There is a network of caves beneath a small town not far from here. Your people avoid the place."
"I know these caves." Kal was excited. "My people visited this world long ago. We haven't been able to approach the caves because many of the meteors that poison us fell in the surrounding town. Can you take us there?"
"Calm down, Kal. There may be a safe access through property my family owns."

Kal-El could not risk flying them away from the battle as long as mortars were still being fired. He wrapped Lex in the offensive cape and fled the scene on foot. Kal ran until he found himself standing beside a barbed wire fence with a hand-lettered sign nailed to a post that read "Smallville No Trespassing."
"Very welcoming town," Kal said dryly as he put Lex down.
"That's nothing. There's a Kryptonian skeleton on a scarecrow post just down the road."
"And you think we'll be safe here?"
"Trust me. We're going to the caves, not into town."
"If you say so."
Lex gave Kal more directions and in moments they were at the mouth of the Kowatchee caves.
Lex pulled a small flashlight from the pocket of his uniform and led the way inside. The narrow passageways soon gave way to a larger gallery filled with wondrous cave paintings.
Kal reached out to touch a wall covered with odd symbols that Lex had never been able to decipher even with the help of the local members of the Kowatchee Indians who considered the caves holy ground.
"This writing is Kryptonian, Lex. This wall translates 'He will come from a dead world not to claim dominion over this one, but to offer protection from those seeking to oppress in his name.'" Kal placed his hand against the wall and a beam of light shot out to impale and lift him three feet into the air.
"Kal!"
"Lex, stay back! Don't touch me!"
The light surged through Kal for what seemed like hours but was no more than a couple of minutes. Then as suddenly as it had grabbed him, it released him.
Lex rushed to his side. He sat down beside him and pulled the young man into his lap. "Are you all right?"
Kal reached up and stroked his new friend's cheek. "I'm fine. This is where we need to be."
Lex frowned at the sensations Kal's touch were causing. How could he feel this way about a Kryptonian? And one he had only just met at that. He cleared his throat. "It is?"
"Come. Let us save your people and mine."
Kal stood, pulling Lex up with him. He took Lex's hand and place both it with his on the wall. The symbols began to rotate and glow. An opening appeared in the wall. Kal led Lex through the doorway into the inner chamber. A single pedestal stool in the center. Kal reached out to touch the glowing crystals in its center.
"Welcome, Kal-El. Is this the one you have chosen?" A deep voice from nowhere asked.
"This is Lex Luthor and I choose him freely, Jor-El."
"Now wait one minute --"
Kal-El stopped Lex from protesting.
"It is done." The glow faded.
"What was all of that about?"
"The war is over. "
"How?"
"We are now mated. There can be no strife between our people, lest it be punished by death. The AI will inform Zod and the governments of your world. It will also enforce the peace."
"No strife? Are you kidding? Humans can't get along with their in-laws. We'll all be dead in a week. And you think Zod is going to agree? Much less ALL of the governments of Earth. They couldn't even agree that global warming existed...."
Kal smiled as he noticed that Lex didn't object to the mating during his rant. He had chosen wisely.
