I decided a long time ago to start a series of entries about typical Nica food and
tropical fruits and veggies.
Ok, so finally here we go. Here is a selection of fruits & veggies I bought for myself a while ago (after everyone was telling me, how sad it is to have an empty fridge!!).
everyone should recognize the papaya and mangoes, right?
In the left corner you have some dark veggies looking like roots with a red tip, they are called quequisque. I love them. They are so soft, softer than potatoes and have such a exquisite taste.
One of the green veggies is an avocado, easy to guess as well. But the other more wrinkled vegetables are called chayote. You need to peel them and boil them (in soup for example) and their taste is very fine and they sort of feel like kohlrabi in your mouth.
Do you see the one yellow and the two purple/berry red fruits in front of the chayotes? They are calala aka maracuja. I like to eat them in the morning sometimes but usually they are only used for making homemade juice. i have never seen anybody eating them. They are quite sour actually.
Here you can see some very important food, platains and bananas - all kinds of them. The tiny ones that usually are bananas but sometimes also eaten green and fried. The ripe platain ones called maduro, that can be eaten raw or cooked/fried. I took this photo about 2 months ago on a farm about 3 hours from the town of Rosita (remember, i told you about some homicides out in the countryside, this happened there!!!).
PS: I am in the office and forced to listen to music the others are listening to.. Well, I have a question for you:
Question: What is worse than listening to Eros Ramazzotti?
Answer: Listening to Eros Ramazzotti in Spanish :(
