Tasting of EC-1118

Aug 25, 2010 23:21

Couldn't resist anymore, and especially with planning on gifting a couple of bottles of this batch, I needed to know whether it would come off as a compliment or an insult.

Nose:
Phenolic, slight citrusy tang, and some alcohol

Taste:
Doesn't have the usual mead sour honey taste, which is odd, wait, there it is, very faint.  Slight citrus sweetness, more of an aftertaste.  Honestly, upfront taste is pretty disappointingly watery, but there's a decent dryness to it.  Taste improves significantly when chilled.  Still not a whole lot at all upfront, but the mid-to-finish taste is quite nice.

Appearance:
Here's something I can be proud of at least.  It's clear.  Completely clear, and exactly the right yellow for mead.

Accompaniments:
The typical whites - fish such as cod, tilapia, etc, chicken, or cheeses such as manchego, gruyere, emmentaler, and brie.  Could probably also stand up to Thai (due to the aftertaste, dryness, and ABV), or accompany a salad of goat cheese, walnuts, and granny smith apples.

Overall:
Would probably not buy this again, though chilled I find it at least acceptable, and with plenty of time to breathe it noticeably improves.  Good enough for a gift, though just barely, and reliant mainly upon "It's the thought that counts", and "IT'LL GETCHA DRUNK!!!!!"
