A Single Man - picspam and review
Yesterday, lauds and I went to see A Single Man. It seems to be having a fairly limited release combined with misleading trailers, and I haven't heard a lot of talk about it, which I think is a shame. I want to convince you all to watch it. It is truly a visually stunning movie, but I disagree with the reviewers that call it soulless, because it is also painful and funny and subtle and sensual and it uses every frame to tell its story. Its use of colour and light is phenomenal, its setting is rich and the characters so very wonderful and so very beautiful.
This is NOT a spoilery review, this is a REC and a PICSPAM and I am mostly going to let the pictures speak for themselves. (my sometimes flippant comments are not in any way representative of the movie, they are out of necessity, as I don't want to spoil you in any way.)

Colin Firth is phenomenal in his role as George, a British man, living and teaching in LA. He is terrifyingly neat and lives in a glass house. The film is a day in his life, as well as flashbacks to his past. He really deserves his Oscar nomination AND his BAFTA win.
Julianne Moore is his best friend Charlie. She is lonely and desperate and human.
Matthew Goode plays Jim, George's recently deceased partner of sixteen years. George loves him, I love him and you will love him as well.
Nicholas Hoult is Kenny, George's student. The blond highlights, bronzed skin and American accent are a little bizarre to hear, but not as much as Colin Firth calling him 'Mr Potter'. That made us laugh a little too much. I adore his fuzzy white jumper, lauds hated it. The blonde girl, that looks like a young Brigitte Bardot, is his not quite girlfriend, and her name is Lois and she is absolutely captivating in her brief moments on screen. The actress doesn't appear to be credited anywhere, which is really going to put a damper on our one sided love affair. Smoking is bad, I said to myself, I had to remind myself this many more times throughout the movie.
Jon Kortajarena is Carlos, he is very beautiful. Your face is perfection, George tells him in perfect Spanish and I am inclined to agree. I recommend you google him. ALSO. Smoking is bad, really very bad and and not sexy in the least.
